local anaesthetic when breastfeeding?

I need a small operation to remove my toenail involving a local anaesthetic. Is this safe when breastfeeding? I have been told by the Podiatrist that they are unlikely to carry out the procedure unless I give up breast feeding. I really don't want to give up yet, especially if it is not necessary.
My son won't take a bottle, not that i would want to give him one but my foot hurts so bad im a grumpy mummy

Probably not the same but I had a local anasthetic at the dentist and managed to continue breastfeeding. I was told it would cause no problems.

This is also a leaflet about dental treatment and BF but specifically about the local anaesthetics used-I'd presume that the anaesthetics used in any day patient procedure would be similar?

http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org....March_2009.pdf

Also on this page scroll down where it says 'What medicines can I taken when breastfeeding?'

I think some specialists just say you have to give up BF because they don't actually have a clue about the safety of local anaesthetics when BF and think they are erring on the side of caution

well i assumed it would be ok as they gave me a local to do stitches after giving birth, is it stronger when they use it in other places? seems like mixed reviews on line so got a bit confused thanks for the links, i may print them off and show her

The Podiatrist should be able to tell you the half-life of the anesthetic. I had general anesthetic when I was BF my middle child and was told that waiting 4x the half-life before feeding again was erring on the side of caution.

i had local anesthetic for a biopsy in my breast and was told it was ok to breastfeed - so if that was fine, i guess that anywhere else should be fine too!
hope this helps!
