help with milk and eczema

Hi
sorry this might turn into a long post, my little boy who is 19 weeks old tomorrow started with a bit of eczema on his face about 6 weeks ago we started using creams etc as prescribed and it cleared is face was lovely and soft and clear. Then about 2 weeks agos he started getting is all over his body worse on is stomach and back but not on his face. I took him to the docs and told him i had used all the creams he had given me and the rash is getting worse, so he decided it could be a milk allergy so he prescribed sma wysoy. i put my little boy on it straight away he didnt mind it at all and drank his normal amounts, this was thursday then on sat when he woke up i got him dressed and his rash was 10 times worse he was covered in it all his face body legs everywhere. So i took him down to weekend docs, and they just said it was eczema out of control and to use this emoliant she gave me, so today it is no better if not a but worse, and he has terrible constipation to top it off and his bum is so sore. I have made him yet another appoinment today, but what do i do if they ask if i want to change milk again? as anyone else had this experience or could advise what i do next xx

Aw, poor LO

If your dr suspects a milk allergy, soy formula isn't the best thing to try. Babies who are allergic to milk are often allergic to soya too, as the proteins are very similar. There are various hypoallergenic formulas your dr can prescribe, I suspect he tried soy because it's a lot cheaper than hypo formula. It's not usually recommended that LOs are put on soya before 6 months, and it's usually a last resort.

I think I would ask the dr for a trial on hypo formula, and see if that improves LOs skin. My LO has cow's milk protein intolerance and is on an amino acid based formula, it was trial and error to see what suited her. She is still on it now at 14 months, as she still can't tolerate milk. Her problems were digestive more than anything else, but a problem with cow's milk can present in lots of different ways.

Good luck x x

^wss Alot of times, a bad skin rash is the reaction to some type of allergy or irritation. sometimes it is simply the washing powder or material their clothing is made out of. I would definately check into what the above poster stated.

As said above, if it is a milk protein allergy then Soy wont be of much help. It shouldnt be prescribed for under 6 months anyways so I woulf go back and say its not working ad get Neocate or Nutramigen to try.
You might find itll take a couple of weeks to be fully out of their system but you should see some difference within a few days.

We use steroid creams to control a flare up, dont be afraid of them they are okay to use when used properly and for daily moisturisation we use dream cream from Lush. Each baby is individual though and you may find different creams work for your LO.

my LO is 4months was ebf until 2 days ago- he developed eczema scalp and face first then all over his body about 4 weeks ago. Apparently only 10% of eczema is related to diet, i also had it as a child. I have stopped using washing powder on lo clothes (just rinse and spin) and hand wash any stained things with baking soda - also using mild steroid cream as required. I have found that burts bees range and california baby have been much better than all the emollients washes prescribed by gp's i also wash him in a bath with a wee bag of porridge oats. Its horrible seeing them itch and be uncomfortable,,,,hopefully he will outgrow it sooner rather than later

I use Dream Cream for my skin and have had ezcema all my life - it's great stuff. What age did you start using it on your LO?

Since he was about 2 i think, id have used it earlier if id known about it earlier. I wont have any hesitations using it on #2 if its needed from a younger age.
