change of formula causing runny nappy???

hi my son is 13 weeks old and has been on sma lactose free for 10 weeks or so. he also has silent reflux but this is ok now cause we also have been using infant gaviscon. We had an appointment with a pediatrian last tues because he had a hernia and while i was there the ped asked me about feeding. He advised me to take him off the gaviscon and give him normal baby formula not a LF one. My baby is 15pounds. so i am presuming he felt he couldnt be lactose intolerant or have reflux. anyway i took him off the gaviscon and started feeding him cow and gate, and i have an unhappy baby. He has 1 or 2 really really runny nappies a day since. is unsettled and crying more. his reflux seems to be getting worse every day but is not as bad as it was to begin with. How long should i wait and see if this settles down or do u think i should just cahnge him back to the LF formula ..... sorry for the long post, Thanks

His poo should be runny! Babies are on a liquid diet and so generally have very runny poos. However if his reflux is getting worse (what medication did he tell you to try instead?) and he seems to be in pain then I would go back!!

I'm having this issue at the moment too and my feeling is that I'd rather find the cause of the reflux rather than just treating the symptoms (Gaviscon has given him very hard poo, from runny previously, in the space of 48hrs). It's very rare for a baby to have true lactose intolerance, and it's normally the cows milk protein that's the problem - can they prescribe you a milk?

hi thanks for the reply. ya he was constipated from the gaviscon but this poo is everywhere up his back and front and out both sides of nappy, all his clothes have to be changed. Surely that's not normal or is it ???? As for the reflux I think he took one look at my son and decided that he didn't have reflux because he was so big. He kept saying are you sure its reflux. I told him that before the gaviscon i felt my son was comfort feeding. he then asked me was i a nurse. When i asked him what he thought it was he just smiled and said he would take my son off the LF and the gaviscon. I hope you find the answers u are looking for regarding the reflux. i am worn out trying to find answers. i hate giving him any sort of drugs. I just hope he grows out of it soon.

God, I hate Drs sometimes!! My Dr pretty much doesn't believe Silent Reflux exists and my son doesn't have it apparently as he's gaining weight and not being sick. Everytime I go she fobs me off with something else and has now referred me to a Paediatrician at the hospital - fingers crossed I get a good Dr as I refuse to give him the Gaviscon, it doesn't do anything about the acid but just keeps the food down to stop them being sick. My LO isn't being sick so why would I use it?? Honestly!!

If your LO isn't lactose intolerant and you remove all lactose from his diet then eventually his body will stop producing lactase, which is what breaks down the lactose and he really WILL be lactose intolerant if he wasn't to begin with!!

If you really feel it was working, then go back on the SMA LF and gradually reduce the Gaviscon - wean him off it very gradually. You can buy it on the internet and over the counter (tell the pharmasist your Dr has told you to buy it) if Dr won't prescribe it

I found the gaviscon fairly good for silent reflux. My son was able to sleep on his back for 7 hours at night, he could not do this when he wasnt taking the gaviscon. Now he is back in my arms again. I did find that it took a few days to work though. Maybe it had to build up in his system or something. The milk comes up and goes back down again with silent reflux and i could both hear it and see him wince when it did. i also found this stopped most of the time. My problem with it is the high sodium count in it. I know what you mean about drs though. I also feel that he didnt listen at all and just seen a healthy and big baby.

My LO had reflux and was on 3/4 medications for it and has CMPI.

With Jack I found the gaviscon made him constipated and we were having to give him lactulose to help him go. The constipation was causing him to strain which was then causing the acid in his stomach to come back up.

I was told about Carobel (by Cow and Gate) by one of the ladies off of here. Its a natural thickener and wont cause constipation. You can thicken feeds as per your LO's needs. You can get that ordered in at your local pharmacy.

I would definately try for a referral to a paediatrician as CMPI and reflux do go hand in hand and I think the percentage is around 50%. That way if LO is showing signs of an intollerance you are already seeing a paediatrician because that is a whole new fight getting prescription milk!

Hope your LO is well

According to my Dr carobel is only available on prescription (but then I'm coming to the conclusion my GP is rubbish anyway) x

Your GP is a fibber! Granted you have to ask for it over the counter to order it, but where I am its sold on the shelf! Its entirely natural, no drugs in it whatsoever
