Please help, i'm at the end of my tether.

I'm stuck in a vicious circle of just feeding my LO constantly.

She was previously having 5oz every 4 hours but for the past week trying to feed her has just been one long horrendous process.

She will take around 45 mins to take a full bottle and sometimes she will just drag it out for 2 hours. By time she's finished and been burped she will settle for an hour max and then she wants feeding again.

Today she woke up at 6.45 and has either fed or cried constantly. It's now 7pm and she has only had 1 hours sleep since she woke up this morning.

I don't know what to do, i'm literally running on 2 hours sleep, a piece of toast and a cup of coffee, I haven't had time to do anything other than be with her, even going to the toilet causes all hell to let loose.

We tried taking her out in the car, her dummy, rocking, letting her sleep on my chest, her baby swing. Should I try hungrier baby milk? She's been like this on and off for the past week but today has been the worse day.

Ah hun, I'm so sorry. I'm not sure exactly but maybe you could try a faster flow teat in the hope she takes each bottle a bit quicker? She could also be having a growth spurt so this may pass in a few days x

I just wanted to tell you what the midwives at the hospital told me (even though I think it's rubbish ) they told me that if LO hasn't finished the feed after 30 mins to just stop feeding time otherwise they'll drag it out for hours and don't really want it...as I said I'm not convinced, my LO is 6lb and just starting to feed properly but it does take us almost an hour to complete a feed with burpings so if I gave up like she said he'd take a lot less :/

Feeding my LO normally takes around an hour at the minute. She takes just short of 5oz every 4 hours but need to stop for burping and a quick nappy change in that time lol. She has been a bit off tonight and was just crying and wanting more bottle even though she had polished off the full 5 oz's and was still having more. It was a fight to get her to sleep as when I took the bottle off her, she would start howling again and she doesn't cry normally so it was really unusual. She has a dummy too and that wasn't any use.

It could just be a growth spurt as I know my LO has been going through one and being a little madam in the process. Still adore her though x

what formula are you using? is it by any chance aptimal? i would suggest changing formula to see if it helps. try a carton of ready mixed first to see if she'll take it first. if she accepts it, buy a carton of powder... good luck

At only a couple of days old, my lo was the same, taking so long to finish a bottle. I changed the teats the the stage 2 teats and worked perfectly. I dont know if you have tried yourself to suck the milk out of a 1st stage teat but its really difficult! The stage 2 teats do say from 3 months but my HV told me it was fine. It worked for us - give it a try? x

We're using stage 2 teats as well -- Finn hated the newborn teats and he was drinking very slowly in NICU -- the day after we changed them, he was able to come home!

I think (and it's my own personal opinion) that babies get bored after awhile when feeding, so with Finn, it was very upsetting for him that he was still hungry after sucking for ages (1+hours), at home I try (notice: 'try' ) to limit him to 30 minutes and he usually has his feed, several burpings within and then, falls asleep in my arms -- I give him a few minutes cuddling time, then present the teat one last time -- he may have a little more or not, but I find it does cut down on his and our mutual frustration...

best wishes

Like the other ladies have said it might be that she's frustrated with the teat. My LO has a very strong suck and he's already on size 3 teats which are supposedly for 6+ months, but he's much happier now, finishes a feed after 5 mins. He got really annoyed on the size 1 teats and I had to change to size 2 very quickly, and feeds got much speedier.

i too think it could be the teat. Switch to a faster one and see what happens. Also do you find that your baby is falling asleep or being lazy while sucking. LIke do you see her suck as confort sucks or good sucks? If she is just kinda sucking for confort you need to try to get more of a vigorous suck from her. Because for me if something wasnt right with her then she would be crying because she cant get enough milk out as she wants to. if that makes sense. If she is falling asleep try to keep her awake as much as possible by burping or changing her diaper. I was told to if they stop sucking or its not processing anything try to run your finger along her face from her ear to just below her mouth or even to her mouth. good luck and keep us updated
