is this ok for making up a bottle, or not?

So far I have only used ready made cartons of formula as my son only has a few bottles a week, but I just bought my first tub of powder and I am a bit confused. I know you now have to make it with boiling water, but if he is going to have 6oz, would it be ok to put 6oz of powder with enough boiling water for say 3oz, mix it up, then top the rest up with cooled, boiled water from the fridge so it is not so hot? Otherwise I have to be organised enough to make up the bottle half an hour before I need it and I can't see that happening somehow!

Yes, in fact that's EXACTLY what I do now!! Half and half with boiling and refrigerated water seems to make it the prefect temp for my LO I use my old smaller bottles for the cooled water as they have screw on lids. I have 2 running so when ones empty I fill it up from the kettle, let it cool and put it in the fridge again!!

This is fine as long as you make sure that you have exactly 6oz water in the bottle ... putting 3oz of boiling in, then adding the powder and then topping the bottle up to 6oz means that the resulting bottle is too concentrated.

I keep the chilled water in the fridge in the exact quantities I'm going to need ... 4oz in Taylors case.... so when I mix the bottle I put 4oz of boiling water in, add 1oz of chilled, then the powder, and then the rest of the chilled - which is more or less a 9oz bottle.

Adding 1oz of chilled before the powder means that the water is hot enough to kill bacteria, but not so hot that it destroys any nutrients

I'm probably preaching to the choir - but I wasn't too sure about the water : powder ratio in the earlier posts, so I thought I'd poke my nose in

Actually there are some powders that you have to add to boiling water (comfort milks, as they don't dissolve very well otherwise), not that I use those lol.

However, I hadn't thought about that when I was premaking my feeds so I shall make sure I leave the kettle to cool rather than using it boiling

Also, I measure my cooled water in a different bottle and tip it in as I know it's not 6oz of milk I'm making, but using 6oz of water for the correct scoops IYKWIM?

Sounds fine to me. I must say with Numbers 1 & 2 we stuck rigidly to manufacturers guidelines - Number 3 we're finding we're much more lax but with no side effects so far. I don't mean we don't sterilise or boil water, etc, but in terms of letting water cool for exact length of time etc I think there's a bit of wiggle room to allow for unforeseen circumstances stopping you getting each feed exactly right. We use Hipp which requires boiling water then allowing to cool for 30 mins then making bottles up. Works well for us as we can 'batch' things and make up 3/4 feeds at a time and then refrigerate.

Sorry to hijack the thread lol, but how do you find Hipp? What made you choose it??
