2 month old pulling back from bottle and fussing halfway through feed

My LO has started fussing a lot during feeds this week and it is soooooo frustrating.

About halfway through the feed he will start fussing and pulling away from the bottle. So I take the bottle away and he does the goldfish mouth at me and makes little fretty noises like he still wants it, and cries, so I give it back and he takes about 5 sucks and does the same thing again. I try to burp him, and nothing happens (typical... he's tough to burp), sooooo I try the bottle again and he fusses again... Argh! What is going on?? Has he just got bad wind? Reflux? Does he want the bottle or not? I feel so clueless Feeding him used to be simple.

Any ideas?
Anyone had their baby do this?

ETA: I'm using Avent bottles... initially I thought maybe the flow was too slow and he was frustrated so I tried the size 2 teat (which previously had made him choke because he couldn't get his swallowing and breathing sorted out!) and it was no better, he still pulled away and fussed. I'm stumped. Considering trying a different bottle to see if it changes things.

Similar thing is happening to us as well -- we used colief, which helps a little (it's recommended for reflux), but I think our LOs (ours are about the same age) just want a bit, then 'rest', then some more, e.g. sometimes he will drink loads, but other times, 1/2 bottle at 9pm, then the rest at 10:30 (sigh)....in-between, we try to burp (sometimes he is burpy....), use the dummy, put him in his chair and/or he falls asleep in my arms, then I try some more formula. He IS drinking around the right amount every day, but it does feel like pulling teeth, especially when sometimes he will gobble a bottle down in a few minutes and I think, ah -- he's fine, and then the next one takes an hour (with the break in-between)............

I would try distractions before offering the bottle again (e.g. changing nappy, putting in bouncy chair, offering a dummy -- just for a few minutes)....but as long as he is getting the amount he should every day, even if it is every hour/90 minutes that he feeds........

best wishes

Is it possible that it gets too cold for him? I know my LO gets frustrated if it's too cold but still wants it. For instance, yesterday he was halfway through his feed and stopped to do a poo (lovely!) and then afterwards when I offered the bottle to him again he did exactly what your LO does. I popped it back in the bottle warmer and he took it then happily.

My baby has always behaved like this, though it is some better now that he is 5 month old. At two months, he was just like you described.

He is very pickly about the angle that he is held to feed. If he is laid back to far, he doesn't like it and will behave as you described.

We also have been through three brands of bottles and nipples!

Good luck!

gosh it seems common but dom is doing the EXACT same thing, fussing, he'll stop feeding randomly, go red in the face, literally PUSH his bottle away and grab the teat to make sure i dont put it near him, but i put it by him and he loses it lurching for the teat, only to take two sucks and repeat. Then nods off its like a vicious circle, i keep thinking its wind, but i strugglie to get it up and im using dentinox to help relieve it which does help. I personally think it must be a growth spurt thing, but as another poster said it could be the milk temp,i spoke to my health visitor today about it as i was concerned dom only takes 2oz-3oz if im lucky, but she said 11 feeds of that a day is good and that it could be its just too cold and needs heating up. I never thought of it like that. God this is one massive gigantic gargantuan learning curve

Argh today it got worse and went from fussing to proper screaming and refusal to feed It was a battle just to get him to take 1 oz. Poor LO seems so miserable I'm wondering if something is actually causing him pain in his mouth as he just screams the minute the bottle is in there but he seems really hungry. His fists are flying into his mouth all the time even when the bottle is there!! He's just screamed himself to exhaustion and fallen asleep. I feel horrible I can't feed him or console him

hey hun i made a post the other night about teething, is he dribbling alot and if hes not hungry and fussing the bottle away does he chomp your finger rather than suck? cuz it seems my dom is starting to teeth (no visable teeth but the gums are starting to irritate) so maybe try it out see what happens n take it from there, im gettin dentinix teeth gel today as dom only had 1oz feeds throughout the whole day yday
