Canadian girls.......or boys!

Just recently we have seriously been considering emigrating to Canada in a few years

I was just wondering if any of you have noticed any good or bad differences between Canada or the UK, just by visiting or from things you have heard or spoke about on here?

Do you think the cost of living is cheaper where you are?

How do you find your healthcare over there?

Is there anything major you think we should consider before moving there?

Any input would be fab!

Cost of living is a lot lower.. my aunt had a huge house here in a really nice city and had a lot of dispoable income, but went to the UK and couldn't really afford to buy a house. It was an adjustment for her because she was used to a big dishwasher and large washer and dryer, over there she had a tiny washer/dryer combo. She was also used to having a basement and big walk in closets! And had to buy wardrobes from IKEA over there.. her "master bedroom" was the size of a smaller bedroom here, like what your kids would be in.. it's all because there is more land for less here.

Cost to have a cell phone is more but getting better.. it is expensive to travel (by air or train) within Canada because it is quite large. Our online shopping sucks really bad.

We also pay high taxes but have a lot because of them.. like you guys we get child tax benefits, publicly funded healthcare that hasn't killed me, publicly funded education (option to go to publicly funded Catholic school in some provinces also)..

We kind of live similar to both USA and the UK..

I remember a few months back there was a campaign to encourage Brits to move to Canada, they were really selling the lifestyle.

i have always wanted to, but only recently started thinking about it again

I live in Ontario. I can't speak for other places, but I can tell you about my area.

I like where I live. We're in a big-ish city (135,000 people). If you want big city life, Toronto is 45mins south of here. If you want "Cottage Country" (where alot of celebs have their cottages in Muskoka) it's 45 mins north. We live on a big lake (prereq for me... I can't not be near water!) and the job rates aren't that bad, atm.

We're in a doctor shortage though. You *can* get a doctor, but you have to go on a waiting list. There are walk in clinics for what you need looked at ASAP, and truth be told I go to them anyways. My doctor's office is at least a 2-3 week wait.

I can't say how it is vs the UK as I've never been. The cost of living is cheap here, compared to friends that I have talked to who live out in Alberta or BC.... but I don't think we're the cheapest out of every province.

I love it here, but then again I haven't lived anywhere else to compare. I don't think I am much help!

Agreed 100%!!

Now to be serious

I was just wondering if any of you have noticed any good or bad differences between Canada or the UK, just by visiting or from things you have heard or spoke about on here? No major differences.....the biggest thing I found was how close all your provinces (???) are to one another. It would take me 2 days to get to Tyff......it just baffles me how close you are all to one another.

Do you think the cost of living is cheaper where you are? It all depends on where you live. Housing where I am from is a lot more expensive than out east but the wages are higher so it balances out. Where are you thinking of moving? I could PM you my monthly costs and you could decide

How do you find your healthcare over there? Compared to the states I have no complaints. Sure we could use doctors who had more time but once you find a good GP you are golden.

Is there anything major you think we should consider before moving there? Are you willing to leave your family to come all the way here. Sure you would have Wendy (and me ) but its a far way to go and not see your family....flights are pricey!!

I think you are right, Tasha... but like how Jaylene said, the wages average it out.

That'd be so exciting to move somewhere totally new! I'd do it in a heartbeat. P on the other hand doesn't want to even entertain the idea of moving within Ontario... so I doubt we'd be going anywhere else.
