Full pay for a full year?! Don't think so! And I agree with the others, what she is referring to is a career break/sabattical which she can request at any time (down to her employer's discretion whether she gets it). Maternity leave is exactly that - it's for a very specific purpose!

Sorry but i agree with Blah and find it a little ridiculous, maternity leave is pretty self explanatory, its a right for people who choose to have children, if you dont choose it you dont get it simple as

Isnt that what holiday entitlement is for? When you need a "rest"

Sorry it was a bit rushed last night as Ed woke up. My argument with MIL was the same as a couple of others on here, maternity leave is to raise and bond with your child and if said person chooses not to have children she does not need the time to do this. MIL and DH both thought this was a bit harsh but I did at one point say that mat leave was like our "bonus" as such for contributing to the human race and the next generation and if she isn't going to do this she doesn't get it. Just glad I'm not alone in my view on this

To pay for her coffee while she's on her fag break??

It's the same as us Non-Smokers taking a fag break at work because the smokers do!

As the majority of others have said Maternity leave is just that, it is by no means a holiday, it is a Mothers time teaching and looking after our children. Full pay for a year??? I wish

thankfully this isn't a discussion about smoking but I'm sure 99.9% of places allow a break of some sort whether you are a smoker or not

i find it bizarre that anyone who does not intend having children would expect to recive maternity leave

the leave is there for a reason, not as a flaming right to all - no doubt the european guidlines will change this in years to come - juts like the shape we are allowed to eat our bananas

its like working in a large company and saying well 'x' has been off sick for 6 months i am entitled to do the same

lmfao

Lol how ridiculous! Maternity leave isnt a bloody laugh now is it? I won't be getting full pay I will get £123 a week! Not my normal wage! If they didn't have maternity leave people would simply not be able to afford to have children. simple. Then who is going to pay for your pensions? God I really hate all the little snidey comments ( not on here but in "real life" lol) about me going on maternity leave etc. xxx

Its her choice not to have children, she needs to face the consiquences of that by not having any maternity leave. Same as the people who do have children have to face the much bigger consquences of raising future generations.
