We want to get a rabbit but...

...we got a guinea pig a few years ago. He was gorgeous, but one night we let alex hold him and she ended up having an allergic reaction to him, we had to take her to hospital but nothing too brutal, although she did swell up everywhere and we couldn't chance that. I'm not sure of the cause, whether it was anything from the cage or the guinea pig himself, but he had massive long hair which I doubt helped.

A few years have passed and we really would love a bunny to join the family but obviously Alexs reaction has stopped us. We've had hamsters since with no issue.

Is there any way we can , well test it out somehow, without affecting her. Oh it sounds stupid!

Is there a local shelter that might have rabbits for adoption that you could go visit?

So (sorry I am not all there with allergies) if I dose her with piriton won’t that just hide any reaction?

The last thing I want to do is try and then drive off to the hospital over again!

I'd take it with you and give it at first sign or a reaction, not before. I think it's the only way youre going to be able to find out? Maybe just try her being close to the rabbits at first without touching and if she's ok let her stroke one? I start with watery eyes and sneezing as soon as I'm near all the animals im allergic to x

Funnily enough I'm allergic to guinea pigs but no other animals. I would maybe go to pets at home or a petting farm where she can pet some. How bad was her reaction to the guinea pigs. I came up in hives which are really itchy and look horrible and had itchy eyes and nose but there's no need for a hospital visit unless there is facial swelling or trouble breathing.

I would take her to pet them but not hold them. If she hasnt had a reaction within about 10 minutes of petting them then i would try holding them. Take piriton with you if she starts getting really itchy or getting a rash wash her hands well and give the piriton and it should work pretty quickly

She ended up in hives and ballooned up everywhere, it wasn’t worth the risk back then as she was still young and preemie lungs.

I bloody hate pets at home bu I will give them a try

Or you may be able to find breeder nearby if your looking for certain type like a dwarf lop etc who would probably be happy to help if you want to avoid pets at home
