Let's Talk Choices

So ladies, contraception. I'm booked in for the IUD next fortnight. I'm not too sure about it about I'm hopeless with taking the Pill and the Mirena and rod have the same hormones as the Depo which I can't have. Please, those of you who have/had the IUD, are you happy to share your thoughts? I'm on the list for a tubal but as I'm unsure if I want to try one more time my midwife recommended long term contraception until I'm sure.

I had a copper IUD for about 8 years, maybe more, with absolutely no issues. My period was never heavier or more painful, and no pregnancy scares. I got it removed so we could have our babies, then my OH got a vasectomy otherwise I totally would have gotten another IUD. It was uncomfortable to get it inserted and the day of insertion I had bad period cramps but it was totally manageable.

I have bad reactions to additive hormones. I've had the copper IUD since September 2015, my periods are normal/light. I barely get any period pains, if I do it's every 4-5 months when my period has a one off normal/heavy flow.

I was terrified of having it inserted, but the procedure itself was pain free, only discomfort I had was due to the lube used for the speculum irritating my episiotomy. I was told horror stories about the after pain, I *luckily* had none! My sister was doubled over instantly in pain! If you are worried about the pain, take some ibuprofen/paracetamol beforehand so it has time to kick in

There is an option for 5 years and 10 years (only difference is size comparison). As it only acts as a spermicide, you can have it removed whenever you like and TTC straight away with no delays from messed up hormones or cycles

I'm hoping I have no issues. But I am so worried about the risk of an ectopic pregnancy if I fall pregnant. I'm also worried about it failing. I currently know of several people who feel pregnant on the IUD - and one of those people had 2 kids on it!!
