False Negatives caused by "Hook Effect"

I was browsing through several pregnancy forums last night and I found something interesting I'd like to share. I've read so many cases where women KNOW they're pregnant, but continue to get negative hpt's and blood tests. Some eventually test positive in their second trimester and some never do. Most of these women are told by several physicians that they just need to face the facts that they're not pregnant. They can't verify it until they demand an ultra sound. One such woman was told she needed to seek a psych-evaluation, meaning...she was a nut case. She refused and got a scan..17 weeks pregnant! These are not isolated occurences. This is happening everywhere, but it's still not discussed or accepted by most of the medical community. These women are getting false negatives due to the "Hook Effect." It happens when hcg is too strong, numbers off the chart and can't be read or translated. When this is suspected, they're urine/blood has to be diluted in a lab in order to get an accurate reading. One case was caused by triplets and hcg was too high. Other medical problems can also contribute. Just wanted to share that and say that if you KNOW you're pregnant..don't allow a doctor to dimiss you. We know our bodies.

I'm in this situation right now! I just KNOW I'm pregnant. I've had two pregnancies before (singletons) and my hcg levels were through the roof! Now I suspect twins or more.. I get faint positives (extremely faint) no matter which test I take.. and the doctors say negative.. however my breasts are getting larger and fuller.. severe heartburn and nausea.. my abdomen is large and firm.. size 24 weeks.. although I'd only be around 15 weeks. Dizzy and nausea spells.. blue veins everywhere.. kicks in my tummy.. I know it's not gas.. babys kicks feels nothing like gas to me. I poke my stomache and get a kick in response. Due to the negative tests the doctors refuse to take me seriously so I'm buying a doppler off the net. I'll know for sure in a few days.. I do already have a listener and it sounds like galloping horses in my stomache. I know that's what a fetal heartbeat sound like.. I'm not nuts and I tried to make myself believe I wasn't pregnant but then I get a kick and feel exhausted and I just can't ignore what my body is telling me. Pregnancy usually produces hcg... yes.. but hcg does NOT produce pregnancy! Hcg can mutate as well so that tests don't pick it up.. I don't know what the case is but there is definitely a baby in there.. Oh periods.. I still have them but I only have a flow for a day and spotting pink or brown for the other 3 days.. Shorter and lighter ever since about 4 and half months ago. Also, I was just weaning my son from breastfeeding when I suspect that I got pregnant. Anybody else in a similar situation??

Why not just go for a private scan That way you'll know for sure.

agreed, I would if I 'knew' I was pregnant. You can get them as cheaply as 40 now!

I have a feeling this is happening to me also, I have been having symptoms since April when I complained about breast pain and they said I might be 6 weeks pregnant at that point, since about 30 negative hpts and 1 gp urine test, the GP refuses to acknowledge that I might be pregnant despite my stomach now being huge and hard whilst I have hardly been eating (see my introduction post for more info). I am going for a private scan next week - I cant take this anymore. I have always had a flat stomach that sits level with my hips, now my tummy is sticking out as far as my breasts! I was a twin but the other one was reabsorbed, there are also other twins in my family so I am a bit worried!

I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually been through this and it turned out that they were pregnant!

As much as I appreciate the info here, this part is really bloody offensive. I'm currently waiting for an appointment for psychological evaluation, guess I'm a nutcase? Please be careful when wording.

I have been made to feel like a "nut case", she even said "have you heard of phantom pregnancy?" with a damned smile on her face. I however am at risk of being disbelieved as I have been in therapy since 13 with depression and they suggested I have a personality disorder. However I feel the way they treat people in this situation is disgusting. I just did a test where I diluted the urine, and we both saw a faint line which then went (I have never see this before in my serial testing!)- I am going to keep trying this to get the concentrations right (when my cheap ebay test strips arrive) and let you all know. I don't see how I cant be pregnant right now - and if this weirdness was going to happen to anyone it would be me! I have decided that if it turns out that I am in fact pregnant I am going to publish something or try to spread awareness of how this happens to women and how disgustingly we get treated. Doctors have to start to acknowledge that everyone is different and that sometimes we know best!

How did you ladies who posted earlier get on? What happened to your situations?

Rachel
