what is child tax credits ive tried reading up & dont understand it

i left my job to look after my nana as shes not to good at the min and cant look after herself, id never let her go in a home but i get loads of help from family & stuff.
now i get paid like £50 a week she was reciving it for looking after herself but now i get it cause i had to leave work, ill still be looking after her until shes able to do it herself again which should be pretty soon and everyone keeps saying about me getting child tax credits but i havent a clue what it means or is, is it just that £20 you get for the baby family allowance?

£18 is child benefit , which everyone recieves , regardless of how much you earn.
Im not too sure how child tax credit works out for non workers. I would expect you would recieve it?

I reicieve it but my OH works and it goes by how much he earns.

My oh works too but i dont, its so confusing!!
