2 Vessel umbilical cord

hi ladies
so im not exactly sure if this is a gestational complication or not....
I had a scan at 18 weeks and another at 21 weeks (due to not getting measurements on hands the first time) and on both of my scans it said i have a 2 vessel umbilical cord... i didnt think anything of it, until just talking to my cousin.
shes been ttc for many many years and has had countless MC's and she also had a stillborn at 38 weeks in the beginning of the year. well she is pregnant again and was telling me that at her 20 week scan monday they will be carefully checking that she has a 3 vessel umbilical cord and not 2. i thought that 3 was unusual until she explained that an umbilical cord normall has 3 vessels not 2, and that that is one of the reasons her daughter stopped growing and passed away, was due to not enough nutrients....
why has no one mentioned this ?! shes under a complete team of doctors and nurses this time around.
im really worried. is it a big deal ?

My daughter has a two vessel cord. Its not really a big deal as long as your other scans came back normal. I had a fetal echocardiogram and a level II scan to make sure she was normal. Did they offer those tests to you?

They will monitor the baby's growth a lot towards the end because the nutrient issue. If the baby isnt growing well as soon as you are term, they will probably induce since once baby is out they will grow normally. Also, laboring is a concern because it may be easier for the baby to get stressed since the cord is smaller.

I am having non stress tests once a week to make sure she is ok.

no one has even mentioned the cord issue to me at all. i only know that i have one like this because i remember seeing it in my scan photos so went back to check what it said.
My dr has not mentioned anything to do with it , they said my scans came back completely normal ?

I would ask for a level II scan and a fetal echocardiogram. They should have offered it to you as a precaution. Here is what I know and I am not trying to worry you. I just want you to be informed for your next appt.

Sometimes the two vessel cord can be a marker for heart and bone defects thats why we were sent for the other scans.

Ask them about non stress tests and growth scans in the future. Its really important to know if she is being supported by the cord. I was so scared when we found out about her cord. But i was really relieved when they told us she was really healthy.

Do you have any questions that maybe I can help shed some light on for you??? I would be more than happy to talk to you about anything you want to know about.

I'm so sorry After we found out they didn't even tell us about anything really excecpt growth scans and non stress tests. I had to ask at I think the 3rd Appt. after that for those other tests after talking to another gal on here about them. I would say if they don't bring it up at your next Appt. I would "politely demand " answers. don't let them push you around. don't leave until you have been explained everything. do you see MD's or midwives?

My last little boy had this, he was born at 39 weeks, weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces, healthy as a horse, and mild jaundice, everything turned out great, he is now a healthy happy 10 month old!!! I was panicked when I first found out, but trust me, take things easy and don't stress, watch his movements carefully!! Best of Luck!!!!
