Is there any alternative to the GTT?

Is there any other way to test for GD than the GTT?

I'm so scared of the test I'm still getting nausea and the fasting glucose test was difficult , enough, especially after the walk to the laboratory, the wait and not being able to eat or drink anything.

Hi, there is an alternative. I had my GTT test on Wednesday and it was a waste of time due to me throwing up the glucose within 5 minutes of drinking it.
One of the kind ladies on here told me that I can use a blood glucose monitor to do the test and it's true (I get mine on monday). I just have to check my blood four times in 24 hours!! My midwife and consultant told me repeatedly that there was no other way and now suddenly there is. I think you just have to push for it

Great! Thanks!

What exactly do you have to do and where do you get the monitor from?

I think they can also tell from an A1C. I didn't have to fast for my GTT. I was allowed 2 eggs and whole wheat toast before I had the drink.

An A1c test is a blood test which is done, it measures your average sugar levels over the past 3 months (usually)
I would speak to your midwife/doctor and ask if they can give you a prescription for a glucose monitor, and some test strips. If they agree, eat some high carb meals or a piece of cake with lots of sugar, do minimal activity for 1 hour, then test, non diabetics would usually be below 7mmol x

Hi, I'm getting mine from the diabetic team at my hospital but you can get it from your midwife or doctor.

Some clinics use a certain number of jelly beans but there are not many that do it. Much better- at least you get to pick the flavor.
