Hi all, ive just been for my 20 week scan and the scan person said everything was ok apart from (the dreaded words), the ventricle in the brain is showing slightly enlarged she said it is only just as normal is 10mm and it was showing 10.6. so a referral has been done to fetal medical centre where i am going friday morning.
I am sooooo worried and am wondering if anyone has had anything similar, what should i expect, any help or anything appreciated..i have no tears left !!!!
There are a few of us that have been through a similar experience. I too was referred as the ventricle was showing as being 10mm but when we got to King's Fetal Medicine Unit a few hours later it was being measured at 8.9mm max. Like you we were also told we were expecting a boy (larger ventricles are more common in boys due to head size apparently). I think our local hospital has a scanner that is not too accurate to be honest and I know those at the centres are far superior.
We were told to come back 8 weeks later. I couldn't stand the wait as so worried, so four weeks later we went to the Fetal Medicine Unit in Harley St to see the world renowned Professor Nicolaides who said everything looked great (the measurement was then 7.9mm). We still went for the scan at Kings at 28 weeks as Prof said you may as well get to see your baby again, and then it went down to 7.5mm.
Well, he was born on August 9th 2011 and is a very strong and healthy little boy with no problems! I was still concerned for the rest of my pregnancy as it was so very scary. Please try to enjoy your pregnancy and not worry. I am really confident your baby will be fine.
There is a thread on this forum called 'bilateral borderline ventriculomegaly....' where you can read the experiences of a few of us (very positive). Sounds like your story is very much like mine, so I am sure all will be great.
Thank you so much for your kind words. janey1975 i know exactly what you mean about it being distressing and worrying, my husband keeps reminding me about how the consultant said in the majority of cases this will amount to nothing but im already worrying about the next scan in 2 weeks and if it has grown bigger. Our main worry when we went to the specialist was that nothing showed up with organs which would result in physical disabilities alongside with a high reading and it didnt everything was fantastic so i think i need to try and refocus its just so hard and i know im going to have such a worrying third trimester
