How much bleeding is considered a "complication?"

So I'll be 8 weeks pregnant on Sunday (3/25) I had spotting today. It was a very small amount and it was reddish, but not bright red. Four days ago, I had some bleeding. It was a small amount of pinkish blood followed by some brown blood. I emailed my midwife about this, but while I'm waiting for a response I thought I'd post here. It seems that bleeding is common and usually not worrisome if light. At what point should I be worried? How worried should I be right now?

"Heavy bleeding in the first trimester, particularly when accompanied by pain, is associated with higher risk of miscarriage. Spotting and light episodes are not, especially if lasting only 1-2 days."

I didn't want to read and run but I thought some bleeding was perfectly normal, obviously not if it's bright red. I was constantly watching my spots but after trying for two years it made me paranoid. Hopefully the mw gets back to you soon for some piece of mind.

My midwife gave me several options. She obviously leans toward using the ultrasound, but I'm opting out of it. She offered an exam, but when I asked what that would tell us, it wasn't something I couldn't already tell about myself. The other option was drawing blood 3 days in a row to see how my hormones are progressing. I'm going to be out of town for a few days so that doesn't work right now. She suggested taking a pregnancy test to see how strong the line was. I took it and the line was very strong. She said that was a good sign and that we should reassess after my trip. So if I'm still having problems, I'll do the three blood draws.
