Child hates PE

Hi

Anyone got any suggestions? My daughter hates PE, and will do anything to get out of it. Has anyone any suggestions how to deal with her?

Have you asked her what she dislikes about it?

My daughter was the same, she has low confidence ... she got anxious before any physical activities so sports day for example she'd have got herself in a mess, came last and would be crying before the finish line - It was the same with swimming!

I started really pushing the it's taking part, it's about the fun, it's not about winning, you don't have to win ... smiling, reassuring her, giving her that little hug and eventually it sunk in ... 2 years ago at her swimming Gala she was so relaxed and I had to look twice while she hit first on her race. She was so proud of herself and on the following year she did it again. We have found running and balance is a weakness of hers and guess what I exercise 4-6 times a week and both of those are my weakness' so I spoke to her about my strengths and weakness' and that we ALL have them.

I'd constantly ask her how PE went and go with the conversation based on what she said. It really helps to find out what the problem is.

x

I do ask, but she just says she hates the sports or other activities they do. She's always 'forgetting' her kit, or complaining of feeling ill.

My question first is does she like physical activity in general? at home, with friends, just going outside? What is her interest?

Being an educator and in the field for years, I have seen students not want to go to classes for very trivial reasons and others there is a bigger underlay issue like:

Not liking the PE teacher, another student(s), being to hard on themselves (thinking they cant do it or self esteem), not understanding the expectations, overly competitive. Just a few

Have you thought about going to the school unannounced and watching the PE class?

Possible hers (with out her seeing you) and or another class in the same age range. Maybe you might spot something.

Not sure if this helps, but I hope that you can put the puzzle together.

One of my twin boys hates PE too and the only reason is that he doesn't like having to get changed as he is not very good at dressing himself. But he is only 5 so this might be different.

Thanks for responses. She's 14 (year 9). She's active outside of school, but doesn't like the sports they do, the teachers, the PE kit etc etc.
She either feigns illness or 'forgets' her kit

I was reading this wondering her age, at 14 I think I did PE about 4 times a year!! I skipped school to avoid it, I'd hide in the woods (school had huge woods behind it, a lot of kids had secret hiding spots!) or I'd forget my kit, feel sick etc etc.

I don't know exactly why apart from the fact I'm not sporty at all, I hate it with a passion!! I just hated getting changed in front of people, I had other girls tease me about my big boobs, or I didn't pain my toe nails. If I did actually take part I was always picked last, or came last in whatever activity it was.
