Scan & Consultant appointment tomorrow possible induction due to small baby

Hi ladies.

I am going for my second growth scan & consultant appointment tomorrow as my baby is measuring small. Fundal height is measuring only 30 weeks and am actually 36 weeks so quite a bit behind, at my last scan the baby was just below the 10th percentile, i was then told to come back for a NST a week later then another scan and consultant appointment a week after that so technically being seen every week. My NST last week was good there were no huge issues although baby was not moving around as much as she should be but has since picked up with movements again and i have also been diagnosed with an irritable uterus where im having tightenings but they are not true contractions. So my next appointment is tomorrow for another growth scan and to see the consultant and my midwife said to me on Monday that they may talk to me about inducing me at 37 weeks (which i will be on saturday) if there is any issues with her size still. This is my third baby and my other two where SGA (small for gestational age) and i had one growth scan with each of tem but was left to carry on myself and i ended up delivering them both in their 39th weeks without any problems other than the fact that they were tiny. I have never had to come to so many appointments in previous pregnancies so im assuming that means that this baby is even smaller and they are concerned. I would just like to know if anyone has been in a similar situation and if so, when you went to your appointment did you get induced there and then or get given a date to come in? how do they do an induction? This is all new to me and i feel like its my first time again! just wondered if i could end up having her tomorrow or next week or if they may just leave me to it again!

Hi! Have recently been through the same thing. Went for my 30 week scan where they picked up that the baby was small, and that there was a discrepancy between the head and abdominal measurements. Was seen weekly for growth scans and every time they debated inducing me but decided to wait another week as she was growing parallel to the graph, although still small. Last appointment I had was at 37 weeks before I went into labour naturally at 37+2. Eva was 5lbs - small but perfectly formed! She's now 8 weeks old and is catching up brilliantly - amazingly she now weighs around 10lbs!

It's such a nerve wrecking experience, isn't it? I hope everything works out for you the same way it did with your other children. Fingers crossed for u and the baby!

Just out of interest, have they ever identified a reason for your babies being small? Only answer I can get is that "some women just have smaller babies", but considering this and the fact that I have had one miscarriage previously as well as threatening to miscarry with Eva too, I can't help but wonder if there might be some underlying cause.

Hi,
Congrats on your baby!

Thank you for replying, the appointment went well the baby has put on weight and they have discharged me back to midwife care now ready for me to labour on my own.
They have said the same thing to me about my babies being small. The fact that they are perfectly healthy but just small for their gestational age, in my situation i was only 4lb 7 when i was born and DH was 6lb 7 1/2 so we would never be thought of to have big babies anyway but they just wanted to check she is ok.
I am a little confused though as my amniotic fluid level was only 9.1cm today and the Umbilical artery flow was only 0.65 and they didnt say anything about this at all. Both of these on my chart have reduced dramatically in the last two weeks on the ultrasound report so i am a little worried. The consultant i saw didnt seem to want to listen to anything i had to say and i basically felt as though i had wasted his time i was only in there for a matter of minutes so im not sure what to do now, do i leave it and wait to go into labour or do i try and find out more but how?!

Yeah I'm having the same experience. First I had aplacenta praevia which has since sorted itself out but now at the growth scans the baby is measuring small. I've had a scan at 32 weeks, 34 weeks, 36 weeks and I have another next week at 38 weeks. they've told me not to worry (easier said than done) but that I have to rest and eat lots.. Having spoken to a few people, it's common and not always a true indication of what size baby will eventually be. A friend of mine was told her baby was small and he ended up being 8 1/2 pounds so don't worry too much!
