It was the contractions I had before I got my epidural that made me throw up! And in the moment it was actually a nice distraction!

Totally stalking this thread as im emetophobic and being sick/seeing sick makes me a bit hysterical, but i have heard that epidurals are a great pain relief without making you sick/feel sick

I had pethidine for my first and it was horrible because I kept blacking out and didn't know what was going on and with my second I had gas and air. It made me feel like I was going to faint at first but after I got used to it the sick feeling went. It doesn't take the pain away, just makes it seem a bit dreamlike. I prefer gas and air over pethidine and hope to take it again this time.

good luck x

I went strait for the epidural.. When my contractions started getting really strong and close together, I started to feel SLIGHTLY nauseous, but I never threw up or anything. I did mention it to the nurse in case it got worse and I might have needed a place to puke, and she said that meant I was probably about 8 cm as that seems to be when most women feel nauseous. When I got to 10 cm I felt all better. I only felt pressure when it came time to push.. VERY nice.

All medications have the potential to make you throw up. Also going med free can make you throw up as well, it's actually a natrual process during labor due to the contractions which are right by your stomach. I threw up with both kids, I had medications with only one of them.

even without drugs many wome vomit, especially around transition.
Obviously this can be a side effect from drugs as well, but i just wanted to point that out.

have you thought about a water birth? Ive had two and the water is like natures epidural!
I have thrown up at 5cm with both my babies but thats not a side effect from the water, just my bodys typical response, like many other mothers (but certainly not all)

Thanks ladies. Really hoping to be able to at least labour in water even if not actually deliver there as hate side effects of drugs...but we'll have to see! My birth plan is very open to change once I'm actually there!

I had a 40 hour labour! and had all types of pain relief!! I had pethidine once at 2-3cm which was ok as a pain reliever, no nausea either. At 3-5cm i used gas and air..found this one made me woosey and very slightly sickly. Then i went on to the epidural and threw up regularly right until babs was born 12 hours later!! Now whether it was the epidural, which worked brilliantly for the pain , or the actual contractions that made me so sick i dont know. I couldn't tolerate even a sip of water!! My nerves went too cos the baby was having difficulties, late decelerations, cord around his neck...so maybe if was nervous sick??!! Anyhow I asked the midwife for an injection of stemetil that helped a bit.
At the end of the day though i didn't really care!! Its all normal and my beautiful little man arrived safely!! Best of luck and dont worry!!
