New to cloth- pocket diaper advice?

So, I have a ways to go yet, but I'm already hard at work researching! Currently *almost* 4 months along and this is my first. I like the idea of using cloth diapers, and have ordered about 1/3rd of a "stash" already. I ordered one size pocket diapers from Nubunz and Sweetdollbaby. I have 15 so far, each has 2 liners with them. A friend who recommended them to me says they don't work well until baby is about 3 months. Anyone had this issue with pocket diapers? I really don't want to use disposable diapers at all- other than to maybe have on hand for a sitter. Are there other pocket brands that I should shop for? Maybe a specific size instead of the one size? I've looked into FuzziBunz and BumGenius so far.

Also- does anyone use prefolds? Pocket diapers seemed easier to master, but I'm not ruling out prefolds. I wouldn't mind giving them a whirl and ordering a few.

Hello and welcome!

Yes prefolds are pretty popular on here. I never really allowed myself to get into them myself because I knew my DD was going into nursery (daycare) and that they wouldn't do prefolds (and neither would OH) so I mainly use pockets and AIOs. I have used Econobums a little though and thought they were good for the price. Flips are a very popular prefold-type hybrid system and would be worth looking into.

Regarding sizing I would say one-size BTPs won't fit most newborns. Yes BG do a newborn size, FBs do an XS size as well. I also know of Kissaluvs, Lil Joeys and Tots Bots do a AIO called a Teenyfit for newborns. Prefolds with XS wraps could also be an option for a newborn. I didn't cloth my DD until 3.5 months so can't be more helpful, however I would say it might be worth looking at pre-loved sections (there's one on here but mostly UK ladies unfortunately, the big US site is diaperswappers.com) as you will only be using newborn diapers for a short while and then moving onto larger diapers.

Thank you so much Discoclare!

I feel like a complete idiot, but approximately how many diapers will a newborn go through? Typically. I know there is probably variation from one baby to another, but can anyone give me a ball park? So I'll know how many newborn or small sized pocket diapers to order?

I would say a newborn goes through about 8-10 diapers per day, but others may have a different opinion!

BTPs don't really fit until 8-9-10lbs, so if you have a small baby you will need something else. I had my 8+lb DD in our BTP pockets from about 3-4 weeks, but they were huuuge and we did get ninja pees out the legs from time to time. If you have a frequent pooer you could be looking at 12+ per day early on. After a few months it stabilized at around 8/day for us, and we are now down to 4-6/day. I started with 30 and somewhere along the way upped it to 40. This has worked for us on a 3/4 day wash schedule since around 4 months when I went back to work.
For my next one I'd consider some prefolds and wraps as you can always use the prefolds in your pockets if you want to later. I love my pockets, but I know others don't necessarily care for them.

My daughter was 7lbs 2 at birth and we started cloth diapering at two weeks old. We use FuzziBunz and bumgenius OS pockets and had no issues but maybe one or two slight leaks. It was not bad enough at all to invest in newborn size diapers. I did buy just one really cute Grovia owl newborn AIO and sadly I sold it earlier this week as it stopped fitting a week ago. She weights 11.5 pounds now. I am very very glad I didn't waste money on newborn cloth.

I did look into the newborn Fuzzi Bunz diapers, but it made more sense to me to purchase the smalls instead. I was 7lbs 6 oz at birth, hubby was 8lbs 9oz at birth, so I'm thinking it would be a fairly safe guess to say we'll probably have one around the same weight. Fuzzi Bunz newborns are listed as under 10lbs, but smalls say 7-18lbs. Seems I'd get more use out of the smalls.... meaning they'd last awhile longer. I might have to just use disposable diapers until baby is big enough. Thank you so much ladies for your input! I really appreciate it!!

I would advise using sposies until the babys poop is regulated anyways, i.e. i think meconium would ruin a washable nappy so maybe worth using sposies at first anyways? Hope this helps

I do have one Fuzzibunz size small. I bought it just to see if fitteds were worth it. It does not fit any better at all than the one size and is only slightly slimmer.
Like I said, if I was to buy again I would buy the one size. They fit her just fine from two weeks on and probably would have fit right away but we had several packs of sposies to use from out baby shower and the hospital. There is no way I would consider anything smaller than the small but the one size have been perfect for us. We have leaks with other brands but FB and BG one size have been great from 8 pounds on.
