Flu jab whilst pregnant

I don't know what to do...It's booked for wednesday but I am unsure if I should get it. I am generally unsure about vaccines and especially while pregnant!
But I work in a shop so see a lot of the general public who sneeze on me etc, although I will probably leave soon.

What to do???? What are your views on it?

I wasnt sure either last year when i was pregnant. I ended up getting it in the end. At the time there were several cases in the news of pregnant women who ended up contracting swineflu and ended up in comas in hospital whilst pregnant. It terrified me. Also DH has severe asthma. I ended up deciding to get the jab more for LO and DH's sake as I personally wouldnt be able to deal with not getting it and making either of them severly ill.

However on the other side DH himself didnt get it. But that was his choice. Neither of us will probably get it this year. Mostly I got it for LO's sake as i looked at it as every other sacrifice i made whilst pregnant( not drinking, not eating certain foods etc). What i wanted wasnt important, what was best for LO was.

Its a difficult and very personal decision, so I'm not trying to sway you either way. just sharing my story. Hope you can come to a decision that is right for you soon

Its a really difficult decision but I'd think about the chances of you getting flu and what the risks are then to your baby.

I had the swine flu jab at 35 weeks pregnant nearly 2 years ago because it was at the height of the outbreak, a number of pregnant women had been really ill and I felt I'd rather have it than risk getting it close to full term or risking my baby contracting it after birth. At 35 weeks he was fully formed so I reckoned there was no risk from it crossing the placenta.

I don't know what decision I would have made if there hadn't been a major flu outbreak at the time. Can you cancel it and then rebook it if flu cases go up?

I think I will get it. I wouldn't have got it in the first trimester though.

Thank you so much for your replies so far, for those not getting the jab, what are your reasons?

I'm getting it. I got it last year as well, as I'm a student nurse and was on placement right through the flu season. I do appreciate that it doesn't protect against every strain of flu, but I think the risks of swine flu to pregnant women are greater than the risks of the vaccine. That's a personal risk assessment though, everyone has to make their own choice.

I'm going to get it too - I'm also a student nurse and I think that (in my situation) it would be irresponsible to the patients in my care not to get it and risk passing infection on. Again - it's a personal choice. xx
