Need some help on organic skin care products

I'm getting a little overwhelmed. I started looking into organic sunscreen because I read that there are some nasty chemicals and carcinogens in them. Well I stumbled on so much information about the toxicity in skin care products in general. So i decided I'd like to start using more "safer" products all around (shampoo, bath wash, sunscreen, lotion etc). Well I've been using the ewg.org site which gives a rating on each products toxicity. First I was going to use aveeno baby but then read that there are parabens in their lotion. So then I looked into burts bees but their toxicity rating was higher than aveeno (i think because there is only limited data and studies on it). Anyways, has anyone looked into this more in depth? What natural products do you feel are safer for baby?

I use mostly Green Beaver products for our family. Their certified organic and we love them. And we use Method and Nature Clean for cleaning and laundry.

Safe Baby Care Products

Dolphin Organics is amazing - they have a full line of bath/skin stuff that is free of parabens and all that. They are rated 0-1 on EWG. Safe Mama listed them on her "cheat sheet" for baby care!

I use BabyGanics for DS in the tub...still J&J lotion though...it just works really well. I bought Burnout sunscreen for him for this summer too.

I don't really use much. I have a bottle of Earth Friendly Baby shampoo I was given that I use once in a blue moon. Generally, water is fine for hair washing. I use almond or coconut oil for moisturising. When she was in nappies, we used Weleda nappy cream if she got sore. I think the only other product I use is Green People sun cream.

I chucked all my cosmetics out a couple of years ago now, and haven't missed them at all. I wash my hair with bicarb and vinegar, and moisturise with natural oils. I use the oil cleansing method or just plain water to clean my face. It's a lot cheaper!

I ended up ordering a bunch of "earth mama" stuff. The ratings on EWG were good. Anyone heard of this or used this line?

I bought a huge tub of pure coconut oil when I read the multiple benefits from using it. Actually I believe it was delivered today so I can't wait to use it! So this might be a stupid question, but I HATE the smell of vinegar. Using that to wash your hair, does your hair smell like vinegar after? I love the idea of going back to natural simple ways instead of using all these cosmetics!

It doesn't smell vinegary at all, although it can a bit before it dries. You can add essential oils to the rinse too. I use half a tbsp white vinegar to a cup of water, so it's pretty diluted. You can use anything acidic, such as black tea or lemon juice. and some things work better for some people than for others. It's a definite commitment though. People call it going 'poo free (I know...). There's often an adjustment period while your hair and scalp get used to not having the natural oils stripped out. I've found it really pays off for me, as I used to have to wash my hair every other day, but now I can easily go a week between washes. My hair is in far better condition these days, but it took a good couple of months to get there.

This is a very helpful site. I find the best way to navigate it is with the keywords at the side, as there's a bit of information overload!

Hope you get on well with the coconut oil!
