Babywearing - recommendations for newborn in Autumn / Winter please

Hey ladies,

I'm just wondering if anyone has got any recommendations for wearing a newborn, in rather cold conditions?

With my little miss we were her in a cheapie front carry harness, but only from around 2 months old and when the weather got a little bit warmer. After that we moved onto a ring sling / mei tai, which is still going.

I'd like to ditch the push chair completely with this new one (due on the 30th of October, so probably going to be November when giving birth), and go for baby wearing from the word go. I'll keep my push chair on hand in case of icy conditions as I'm not too stable to begin with, but if the weather allows it I'd like to carry. So, what would you recommend that...

1. Fits a plus size lady (size 18 / 20)
2. Allows for newborns to be carried from birth
3. Is warm enough to use in winter
4. Does not cost the world, unfortunately we're looking for everything on a budget

Thanks =)

get a stretchy wrap (moby, close parent etc). Theyre sooo snug can you can cover your babys head so just a tiny crack for them to breathe is showing. I wore roman in mine in a horrid blizzard earlier and he was cosy and fell fast asleep.

I've worn both of my girls in a mei tai in winter. It's plenty warm enough if you dress them appropriately.

Thanks ladies =)

I'll definitely have a look at a wrap, they do look very cozy especially for a newborn. If I remember correctly you have different types of material, right? If so, what would be recommended?

I'm definitely giving our mei tai a go as well, as we already own it and I do love it. I wasn't sure if it would be warm enough, but on milder days I'll definitely try it.

A stretchy wrap like a Moby wrap is great for newborns, its made from jersey stretch cotton. You can get woven wraps too which work from birth to toddler and beyond but they have a steep learning curve. A stretch wrap is a perfect introduction to wrapping, I had one first and we use a woven now x

I carried both mine in a stretchy wrap - my son was in a moby and my daughter in a sleepy wrap (now called a boba wrap). I like the boba better than the moby. Now I carry my girl in a woven wrap. You can use these from birth but I prefer the stretchy when they are tiny because it's easy to pop them in and out, but I love the woven wrap once they are about 15lbs. Now I carry my LO on my back.

If you are looking for something newborn to toddler, I would suggest a woven wrap or a SSC (though you need to buy a newborn insert depending on the brand). I have both and I can still carry my toddler with no problems (when he lets me). I prefer the woven wrap because of it's versatility and just comfort level, but it does have a learning curve. The SSC is quick on/off and my OH likes it much better than the wrap. Would you be sharing with your OH?

Both mine were born in November and I wore them throughout the winter here (around -20C). If I wear them over my coat then I need to dress them appropriately, but I have a BW coat so I only need to put a hat on my girl ans she is toasty even in -30C weather. I find the wraps can be a bit toastier and snugglier generally.

Thanks ladies,

I love how everyone in this section of the forum seems to really take their time to share their opinion and experience. It really is very much appreciated.

Going by the above responses, I'm leaning towards a stretchy wrap and will start looking into them properly soon. It looks a lot more complicated than either the ring sling or mei tai I'm used to, but I'm sure that with some practice it will be manageable =)

I think DH will be wearing as well, as he was the one who mostly wore Eleanor until she turned around 4 months old when we started sharing properly. He doesn't mind using whatever I use though, so I'm sure he'd be fine with a stretchy wrap. Is the moby a 1 size fits all type of wrap, or does it come in different sizes? Has anyone got experience with one when being of a larger build?

Also, Sun ... a baby wearing coat?! I'm intrigued, never come across that before. I'm going to have to look into that! I'll need a new coat this winter anyway as there's no way I'll fit my old one =)

look into the close parent hun. you put it on like a tshirt then pop baby in and tighten the sides (like a ring sling) and wrap a piece around the baby.

super easy

The great thing about my coat is it is a maternity coat and babywearing coat - and I can wear LO on the front or back! It's not stylish or anything, but I needed function more!

I had a look at a video of the 'Close Parent' (or Caboo apparently, must have changed names because it seems like the same item), it does look nice and simple to use. I've also had a look at ways of wrapping a normal stretchy wrap, and it doesn't seem too difficult either.

I think I might get a cheapie wrap from eBay in the next few weeks some time, to get used to wrapping it and see how it feels. If I like it I'll have a look at a proper brand like a Moby for around when I'm due.

Sun - I don't care about stylish, just want to keep the little one warm. I like the MaM tunic, just not sure I can convince DH it's worth the money when we could just wrap the little one up warm instead.
