Kinda freaking out. CPS home visit?

My daughter is almost 2 weeks old. My baby's urine screen at the hospital was negative for all drugs but I just got a call today from a social worker saying her meconium tested positive for marijuana and she scheduled a home visit after this weekend. I just don't know what to expect. She said something about maybe referring me to take drug classes "if I wanted" but neither of us even smoke anymore. I will take the drug classes if they're required but I personally feel it's unnecessary but anyway besides that...We just don't know what to expect. Will we both be drug tested? Will I have to take monthly or weekly drug tests for a certain amount of time? Or will the worker just come in, assess our house and our demeanors, and make a determination? The fear of the unknown is what is upsetting me so bad...Would anyone know the actions a social worker would take for a positive marijuana meconium screen?

I've no advice to offer but is it normal for a hospital to take urine and poop samples after you have a baby?I've never heard of it?!

They do that here if they have a report directly if a mother's pregnant of suspected drug and alcohol abuse.

Best thing you can do, is be totally transparent with whoever does come to see you. The proof is in the stoop so there's no backing out of it and you will only get yourself in trouble if you try. Tell them what was happening, what you and your partner were doing and what you are doing now and are willing to take any and all help going forward from this point. If they see your willing to accept their help they will be more inclined to help you and not go the other way. I hope all goes ok x

After spending hours reading about this yesterday I have some more specific questions.
First of all, I read the social worker can't legally come into your home without a warrant and a police officer there? I was planning on just letting her inside though.
I also read that if she offers me something like substance abuse classes or a drug screen that I can refuse it? But I also read something if you refuse it they just automatically remove the child from the home
I have seen people on DRUGS before and unable to keep food or utilities in their house and unable to care for themselves much less their children and social services should have been called in those cases but they weren't. And now I feel like they're kinda putting me in the same category as people who use heroin and meth. I know my child would be much better off with me than in the hands of state care...dear God.
What can the worker legally do and not do? Can she really make the demand "Take this drug class or else I'll take your kids" and act on it? Can she really do that?

In short? Yes. They can make that kind of demand. In the UK anyway, being as you are calling it CPS I presume your in the US? I don't know about their jurisdictions and power there but I know in the UK, a social worker can call an emergency court hearing - without you present, and state that they have offered a drug test on the basis of a positive stool sample and you have refused. They will state that it is in the child's best interest to remove the child from the setting until they can ascertain the level of drug use past and present. And they will likely be granted that too.

They are acting with you so quickly because a drug was found in your newborns stool. That means you were using whilst pregnant and they will take that as you putting your child directly at risk.

As I say, the best thing you can do is be cooperative in this situation and tell them everything. Offer to take drugs tests as and when they require, if you have nothing to hide, that won't be a problem. Accept all help they offer, drug councilling, hell even stuff that you don't think you need, accept it all as it shows willing and it shows your putting your child first.

As Sarah says, they have the positive test so being up front with them is the best option. As you have both stopped then hopefully it should be quite straight forward in what they would like you to do, maybe a course and a test and you should be signed off. How long do the courses last do you know?

Update: They did the home visit and referred me to general counseling (I have bipolar) and also to a Family something idk lol but the worker said the Family thing would do home visits, or at least one initial home visit. She said my case is open for 45 to 60 days and when those days are up I guess she will follow up with me and she said possibly drug screen me (which is fine). But as a fair warning to any pregnant women on here, I thought I would be fine because I only smoked weed when I was pregnant. I didn't do any other drugs. But they don't discriminate when they get a positive drug test and the hospital workers have to legally contact CPS if it's positive for ANYTHING so if you are pregnant and doing anything, STOP NOW so you don't have to go through what I just did. I was depressed all weekend thinking about someone else raising MY child.

I'm not being bad or anything but everyone knows you shouldn't smoke when pregnant or in general but why for god sake to do drugs even its just weed I mean would you give a new born a ciggatette or an alcoholic drink or a spiff? No you wouldn't so why do it to an unborn baby that has no choice on what goes into its system. I hope this is the wake call you need. Its a shame you couldnt make a smarter decision on weed while you were pregnant. And yes I'm know I'm being harsh but when it comes to babies and drugs you don't mess up .
