I kind of feel a little leery of a breast pump too, so I bought new and I'm planning on all new bottles too for the same reason. But in regards to the pump, as long as you did your research properly as to what parts need to be replaced actually and replace all the needed parts (ie those that come into contact with milk), it would be OK.

I am very pro-used otherwise. I actually have a used car seat myself (it's from a friend though) and would consider a used crib (with new mattress of course).

I rented a pump from the hospital which would be the same as 2nd hand. They opened all new tubes and parts though... So it's just the mechanical part that was rented. That's what's most expensive to buy.

I wouldnt use a 2nd hand mattress or carseat. I would use 2nd hand plush things that can be washed( with steam or extra hot) in the washing machine. And high heat in the dryer. So small stuffed animals or that sort of thing.

I wouldn't use a 2nd hand maternity pillow. Although saying that I wished I could sell mine! Lol I barely used it and decided I didn't like it. It's been sitting in a tote since megans pregnancy.

I wouldn't buy second hand:

bottles
breast pump
mattresses
panties
bras
reusable diapers
sheets

and that's about it I think... I did, however, buy my travel system including the car seat second hand with my last baby. Got the whole thing including the base for 30$

No second hand bottles here (FF so don't worry about the breast pump problem lol). Anything to do with eating really so things like weaning spoons and pots are cheap enough new.

Underwear, socks and bathing things too....I wouldn't buy second hand towels for example. Bath seats too...new definitely.

A little bit off topic and I'm not suggesting anyone here feels this way, but I've gotten a lot of flak from people for my choice to use used stuff (even though the majority of it has come from friends and family and the rest is only lightly used). I've had people flat out say things like "well if you think used is OK for your child that's up to you, but I felt that my child deserved their own new things" and making me feel like a bad mom for going used. Meanwhile I am saving thousands. Maybe they're jealous that nobody handed down stuff to them, I don't know, but it kind of bugs me.

Most stuff has come from ebay or charity shops or hand me downs with us. My hubby and I of course got a few gifts and we were lucky to have the travel system and cot bought for us which was great. We have also kept absolutely everything from Earl so all bar a few exceptions will be handmedowns from Earl to the new one.

I am also a big believer in while you can, buy 2nd hand. Earl is 2, so doesn't know that the majority of his stuff comes off ebay or from charity shops, even now.

Totally and utterly RIDICULOUS!!

Who are those idiots telling you that anyway?

I am totally for 2nd purchasing, as it is so much cheaper and it I really resent this mad consumerism that we are exposed to daily. Why not re-use? What's wrong with that? That's what my mum did, and her mum....

I'm really not at all worried about a few germs, that's what 90C wash is for...
Everything I have purchased 2nd hand so far has been in excellent condition anyway.

I am pretty sure my kid won't be deprived in any way because I purchased used and not new.

Some people prefer to buy all new, and that's fine, but I doubt that makes them better parents...
