Asthma - anyone dealing with it and pregnancy?

Hiya. I've got asthma but for ages it was under control thanks to a steroid inhaler and loads of exercise.

Since I started ttc I came off the inhaler gradually and for the last 6 months I'd been off it completely and also fine. Until the weekend, when I had to use my reliever for the first time in months and again this morning, when I had a proper attack.

I'm guessing that I'll have to go back in the steroids and I'll see my GP about it. Am disappointed, was trying to do the pregnancy without meds.

Just wondered if anyone else was dealing with asthma, how you coped.

I've had asthma for years but it became very mild and I barely even used my inhaler. From early pregnancy until about 24 weeks it came back with a vengence! I started waking up in the night not being able to breathe and needed my inhaler constantly. Since 24 weeks it's calmed down a lot but my mw said it's very common for asthma to get worse during pregnancy. Every professional I spoke to said that it was perfectly safe to use my inhaler whilst pregnant & to use it as often as I needed to.

Thanks. Hopefully it'll calm down but I'll probably go back on my preventer. Don't want to take risks and I feel like an idiot really!

I had bad asthma when I was younger, but by the time I was a teenager it became pretty much non-existent. I haven't even owned an inhaler since I was probably 12.

But, mid-pregnancy I noticed that it had come back pretty strong. I'm really not used to it anymore, so when it catches me it's hard to deal with. I've been able to side-step it recently by avoiding my known triggers (cats, dust, etc.) and just being extra careful. I don't want to start up on inhalers or anything because I'm reeeeally hoping it goes back to normal after I'm done with my pregnancy.

You could use your inhaler while it's bad like I did - I went back to not needing it again afterwards! I used it a lot for about 4 months when I was really struggling, haven't used it once in the last month though!

Hmm, I think I'll make an appointment with my asthma nurse. There might be an alternative to the drugs I was on. I'm scared she'll give me a row though!

i dont use my preventer much but i use the blue one about once a day if u have asthma its important to keep it under control.i think its just common sense that if your lungs arent getting enough oxygen then assume your baby isnt either. u shouldnt stop meds without your dr;s consent.

My Dr said it was OK - I've not had any problems for ages and haven't needed meds at all, not even the blue one, for about 9 months.

I had asthma for the last ten years, but after I quit smoking (yes, I know...sigh), only had to use inhaler a few times, except the last week or so of pregnancy when I had extreme breathlessness due to big, long baby (I am small) and swelling due to ultimately, PE. My ob/gyn said it was absolutely fine to use my inhaler and once baby came (emergency c-section), my breathing slowly (within a week) became normal again -- so, breathlessness might be due to asthma, but also due to pregnancy itself (if that makes sense)....I now have my inhaler just in case, but as baby is almost a month old (eek!), and I am continuing not to smoke, I haven't had any problems for a few weeks.

Just remember to take things slower than you might want and practice your deep breathing exercises (I think I was hyperventiliating (sp) at times as well)....but if you need your inhaler (I also used that plastic cone thing to make sure I was getting all the medication as well)), you need it (but I was also told that there shouldn't be any danger to baby if there is breathlessness, as well!)

best wishes
