My son was jaundice so we had to wake him every 3 hours. Of course he woke on his own anyway. He fed every 3 hours. We demand fed but that's just how he wanted it. We tried not to let him to exceed the APA (or is it AAP??? ..the pediatric association here in america lol) feeding guidelines and did very well with it. My MIL fussed at us for trying to "raise a child by the book" but the feeding sheets were very helpful and we will be going by them again.

Thank you all girls
I spoke about it with OH and we agreed we gonna try let him tell us when he is hungry .
If he is not gonna gain enough weight like that , I am sure our pediatrician will say something and then we can change it .

I fed my son religiously every 4 hours. Even if he slept i would wake him Yup, first time OTT mummy

Have to say though, it was great to have a routine, i could plan trips out etc etc better than ever!

Everyones different though but i think i would follow the same plan again when it eventually happens for us

I definitely don't plan on waking up baby unless there are special considerations or health problems. I'm a big believer in "eat when you're hungry." If baby is sleeping he probably needs sleep more than food. But that's just my take on it of course.

Great question. I've been wondering this myself. Think I will be feeding on demand and not by the clock x

I would agree, only when my second slept for 5 hours when she was a few days old my boobs got so heavy and uncomfortable that I HAD to wake her and feed her. Pumping wasn't an option as I had sore and cracked nipples. Also I got worried about her. We had to strip all her clothes off and in the words of my midwife 'make her uncomfortable so she wakes up'.

I always think it's funny how older people always say 'Oh my baby slept for hours' my mother said this too. In reality, chances are they didn't 'always' sleep, they do sometimes but memory has a habit of playing tricks on you.

I fed all of mine on demand, for my sons that was every 2 hours in the beginning, for my daughter it was every 3 or 4. In my experience boys eat more and sleep less. But that's just my experience. Every baby is different.

I'll be doing what I did with Earl again. Feed on demand with gaps no greater than 4 hours in the day and 5 hours at night - this goes for the first couple of weeks while you get to know one another, and you can design a routine that works for you. Easier for me though as I'll be FF from birth so I can plan accordingly lol.

My LO is 5 weeks and I have fed on demand since birth. During the day she eats every 2-2.5 hours and every 3-4 at night. However some days she nurses more because she is either growing or needing comfort.

With my LO once we knew he had no weight gain issues which would have dictacted otherwise we fed regularly during the day then let him decide at night. We dream fed at night though until he was fully weaned though as he was a rascal for waking 30 mins to an hour after I had gone to bed.
