Laxatives during pregnancy

This is an embarrassing subject but I need to know if anyone else knows anything!

Basically I suffer from chronic IBS and I need laxatives to go or I simply don't go!

Anyway I am prescribed Movicol which my doctor assures me is safe for baby, but am I being to much of a worry wart by being paranoid that it'll affect the baby in some way?

I had the opposite issue with my first baby I had to be near a loo 24/7.

Anyone got any advice?

Hiya,

If you have explained to your doc that you are pregnant and he is happy to give you these then you should be fine. Have you looked into how some food groups aggravate IBS? I used to suffer really badly and cutting out wheat made my life so much better. To the point where I would say I dont suffer from it at all. (unless I eat wheaten bread which kills me!!)

Good luck

Heya,

I also suffer terribly with constipation, and take Movicol - it doesn't work at all for me.

I think it's safe to take in pregnancy because my doctor prescribed it for you me - but does it help you to go? It doesn't for me.

Clare.

to be honest it doesn't really work that well! I need to take at least 4 sachets a day to make it work

But I limit myself to 2 just to be on the safe side, although the doc did say I could use as much as I want!

Lactulose is safe to use in pregnancy. It's a liquid you can get from any chemist.

Heya,

I used to take much stronger laxatives before pregnancy which are obviously banned now. I get so upset because I get off the toilet after another failed attempt and I know that the laxatives that would help me to go are in the bathroom cabinet above me - which I'm not allowed to take.

I also have piles now from the constipation.

Clare.

I also suffer from chronic IBS and have suffered really badly with constipation during my pregnancy so far. Went 8 days without going and took about half a bottle of lactulose to get me to go. I usually take Movicol but my GP told me that it is not recommended for use in pregnancy as there has been no research into its safety. I was really annoyed cos obviously now I'm having problems going at all let alone regularly enough to keep me comfortable. Hopefully it will all settle soon.
