leukocytes in urine

sorry if this is tmi but at my check up a the docs on Monday they told me I have leukocytes in my urine. I have been reading up about this ever since and it seems that this could be quite dangerous in pregnancy, although they didn't seem too worried about it.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did it turn out to be?

Thanks

leukocytes are just white blood cells and they can indicate infection but most people will find they have a small amount of these present in their urine as long as they're not above a certain level your GP wont worry about this so try not to stress and please don't google things as you will only scare yourself and convince yourself that there is something wrong, if you're really worried give your GP or midwife a call and ask them to explain it to you.

It is normal to have a few WBCs in your urine, probably shed from your kidneys or bladder wall. Unless there is a large amount of WBC (white blood cells) in your urine, you should be worried. An abnormally large amount of WBCs indicate infections, either bladder or kidney. Did you Doc put you on any antibiotics? Do a urine culture to see if there's any bacteria in your urine?

they sent the urine away for analyis but when I rang for results today I only got to speak to a receptionist who didn't seem the sharpest tool in the box and just told me I had to bring in another sample. Sounds dodgy to me, surely they can see if I have an infection or not from a culture along with a routine dipstick?

A urinalysis (which can be done in an hour) can see if there's a bacteria in the urine, but it can't tell you which bacteria. But a culture, which can take a week or 2 to grow, will tell you which bacteria it is.

It could be an indication of a bladder infection and can be treated with antibiotics. No big deal though. The only time a bladder infection becomes a problem during pregnancy is if it's left untreated and you're in the last trimester as it can cause preterm labor. I had a bladder infection at 7 weeks and took an antibiotic and all is now well.
