11 weeks, doctor can't find heartbeat, normal?

I had my second appointment today and the nurse and doctor tried to find the heartbeat for and they couldn't find it. They tried before at 8 weeks and I wasn't worried he couldn't find it.

Now I'm a little worried. Of course afterward the nurse was going on about how at 12 weeks your risk of miscarriage goes down and if something would have happened it would've already. Not something I wanted to hear then for sure. She was just trying to comforting.

They only used the hand held doppler thing. They have me going in on the 8th to try again but I have an ultrasound on the 12th.

So, is this pretty normal not to hear it this early? As anyone is, I'm just afraid of the worst scenario happening.

it all depends on a lot of things, how big you are, where the baby is, etc. I've had it happen where they didn't hear it till around 15 weeks. Although I saw it on ultrasound weeks before. i'm sure things are ok. Although I know it's hard to be convinced otherwise. Good luck!

Thanks you guys. I am big so I also figured that was a factor but they didn't say it. I also am wondering why they're trying so hard as is my husband. My mom was even saying that with her past pregnancies they didn't try until she was about 4 months.

Glad to hear it is generally too early though.

I was 16 weeks (with my 1st child) and they still struggled to maintain a rhythmic heart beat as it just kept fading out etc. I wouldnt worry, i think it was pretty silly to even consider listening for a heartbeat !! Good luck hun, im sure everything is fine.

I cant believe they tried to listen at 8wks!! Think its only possible to see heartbeat then.

My midwife, and many others I have heard, will not listen til 15+wks - as that is likely to be the time when heartbeat is easily heard for everyone.

I really dont think you should worry at all

Everything Im sure is fine, like everyone else has said, Im very surprised they tried to find the heartbeat at 8 weeks with a doppler, all the midwives I have had in the past have said before you cant hear anything on them till around 16 weeks. A scan is your best bet for finding the heart beat and you can hear it on the machines too, but not sure of all the machines are like that though.......

Thing is, after 3 weeks, you would have NOTICED if something had happened to the baby. They would have noticed it not getting bigger. I heard my heartbeat from 10 weeks, and even then it took FOREVER to find and I had to press it RIGHT into my tummy.

You would know if there was anything wrong.
Have they tried doing a internal scan or just a normal scan and seeing if they can SEE the heartbeat?
