nuchal translucency scan - is it necessary?

Hey everyone. I don't have my first prenatal appointment scheduled until Nov 24. I'll be 13w5d by then! I read that the last day to have the nuchal translucency test is 13w6d. I'm not even sure if they will be doing a scan when I go on the 24th.

Should I try to get in someplace else earlier to have it done? Do I really need to have it done?

Thanks!

You need to have the scan done, as they do more than just the nuchal test. The nuchal part is an early downs syndrome indicator, so if you're not worried about having that done the dates won't be a problem. If you want to make sure it's done, I'd give them a call and ask if it's ok.

The NT scan is completely optional - you need to consider if you want it doing or not. You should have a 12 week ish scan for dating purpose and to see how many babys the pregnancy holds even if you dont want the NT testing done x

If you have it later than 14 weeks they will offer you a triple blood test for downs (just one set of blood lol they just test it for three things) this is what they used to do before the nuchal test but its not as accurate. feel for you this happened to me last preg if it happened this time i would shout and scream for a test.

Its a personal choice if you want to get the NT test or not. It just gives you a risk assessment for Down and other trisomy disorders. The next step would be to do an amnio.
If you wouldn't do an amnio and you wouldn't consider termination... then the NT test really isnt necessary and may just cause you to worry more (if it gives you a risk result that sounds high, but you don't want to do the amnio because of its risks, you may now be worrying through your whole pregnancy and the baby may still be totally fine.. a 'high' risk is 1 in 200... or half a percent chance).

I chose not to do it because of the stress. I'm under 30 and neither of us have any history of trisomy issues in our families. I figure I'm low risk anyway, why bother.

If you want it, call up NOW and schedule it!

i did the test but only cos i could see baby again & i wasnt sure when i would get to & at this stage i wont get to till i am 20 weeks or so (its the earliest appointment i could get with the midwives who will have my care)

Had the test today, they said all looks good but that doesnt mean there isnt a risk but they think its low. I still have to wait for the blood test & for them to look at the blood work & baby measurements to be sure.
