Little Concerned....

Hi Ladies,

This might just be me over reacting but im shocked at the lack of care iv recieved from my GP.

I went in last week for the 1st time to tell them i was pregnant, they dated me at 6ish weeks. The reason i went was because i was having severe pains in the night and it was waking me up. This happened twice.

They referred me to hospital for an emergency scan as they were concerned about an ectopic. They were more interested in getting me out the door, all they did was take my blood pressure... A few of my other friends when they have been in have had bloods taken, recieved a pregnancy pack and been given a prescription..... iv had none of this.

Anyway i got to the hospital they examined my stomach externally but they didnt even do a scan.

They have now said i am to wait for a letter for a scan appointment to come through in the post but i will be 8 weeks on Monday and im a little worried i havent had any bloods taken, a prescription or even a letter for a scan date. I know the scan can be from when your between 8 and 12 weeks but am i right to be concerned or am i over reacting?

Any advice would put my mind at ease, sorry to ramble on!

Jade x

I would be more annoyed at the lack of care at the hosp. When I went for my first gp visit he sent my up to epu as we had concerns (I was only 5+2) and he only checked my bp before sending me up, he didnt want to do bloods etc until we knew things were ok.
EPU scanned me and booked me in for 10 days later to check things were going to plan. I cannot believe when your gp has queried ectopic they didn't make a scan a priority!

Yes and no i guesss. Its normal for your doctor to not do bloods or give you your notes. All most doctors do is sayu congratulations. its your midwife or at your 1st scan appointment where you would get your notes and have blood taken. Call your doctors again and ask about how you get in contact with a midwife. You normally start seeing your midwife bwtween 8 and 10 weeks. She normallyu goes through your notes and then when you have your scan they take blood. whats not normal is your care over your pains. Are you still getting them? Normally with pains they wouyld at least take bloods and sometimes offer an early scan. I was very disapointed when i 1st went to the doctor with my DD. I was expecting a chat about what to expect but all i got was make an appointment with the midwife at the desk. Call your doctor again and ask about midwife, call hospital and ask about scan and if you still have pain let the hospital no.

Well the doctor called the EPU but they couldnt get me in that week, bearing in mind i went in on a Monday to the doctor, thats the reason he referred me to a different department for a scan. +

The hospital didnt think it was necessary to scan me which i was shocked about as i had been referred on such a serious matter... and said they would send out a letter, so now i feel like iv been forgotton about & that i was foolish for going to the doctor in the first place, and i just dont know what to expect from them now

The Doctor's should of rang your local EPAU and booked you an appointment for a scan and blood tests if they suspect it could be an ectopic? I can't beleive they are taking there time with this, If i was you I would ring your GP or EPAU centre and ask why this is not being treated more seriously.

Sorry I don't mean to scare you but you need checking ASAP as ectopic pregnancies are very dangerous, I had an ectopic pregnancy last year and luckily I was admitted to hospital, Mine had started to rupture which is life threatening.

Please ring them ASAP Xx

Iv also had no advice as to how to contact a midwife or anything. I know they dont have one at my doctors surgery so i guess i would be going to the hospital for all of my scans?

Hi Jade,

I'd be worried about the ectopic/scan.

I haven't had an ectopic.
The first time I was pregnant, I went to the doctor and he said "Oh you're probably pregnant. take folic acid and ring the midwife in a week or two." When I did, they put my booking in appointment at 10.5 weeks and my scan for 12.5. Unfortunately I miscarried at 10 weeks so I didn't actually get to see anyone.

This time, I skipped the doctor and rang the midwifery direct, who again put my booking in at 10.5 weeks. Then I thought maybe I should go to the doctor (different one, same surgery) since I'd had some spotting at 6 weeks. He did take my blood, but nothing else. This actually confused the midwife at my booking in, since she was expecting to take my bloods then, and didn't know whether to again . She gave me a big stack of leaflets and booklets, and my bounty pack and free-prescription form.

In short! For taking blood, it seems like the midwife expects to take them at your booking-in, but some gp's take them too

Hope all goes well xx
