Sushi

Boy do I miss sushi. I was wondering what you all think about or have heard about eating cooked sushi like california rolls for example. Do you think it's safe because the components are cooked or would you avoid it anyway because it's being handled in the same area and by the same hands that handle the raw fish? Just want to know what my options are if my friends really want to go to sushi and I tag along.

I've been craving sushi so bad but I'm avoiding it. I think its better to be on the safe side and not eat it at all.

I've heard that women in Japan go on eating sushi throughout their pregnancy. I don't know if it's true.

You can eat sushi. Restaurants or shops have to freeeze the fish before they use it to kill any bacteria, which makes it safe.

I LOVE sushi. As a matter of fact I just had it last night. A little salmon sashimi, some spicy tuna (just two pieces, hubby ate the rest) rolls rounded out with an avocado salad and shrimp shumai. Delicious!! I am confident in the sushi chef in the restaurant we buy from. . Midori1999 is correct, it is flash frozen to kill parasites. I personally limit the tuna because of the mercury levels. . . that said, I have NEVER been sick from sushi while pregnant (or otherwise). I've had it several times this go around and I had it many times when I was pregnant the first time. You have to be smart about it and trust your own gut/instinct. I would never buy it pre-packaged or from a restaurant I wasn't already very familiar and comfortable with the high quality standards...

I ate the cooked stuff in my last pregnancy, I think you just need to make sure you are goin to a restaurant that handle food properly.

Raw fish sushi is as safe as any other food during pregnancy and otherwise. Restaurants have strict guidelines about freezing the fish for 24 hours beforehand, which kills all parasites (the thing that would make you sick). You are just as likely to get sick from eating a hamburger.

I'm salivating just reading this. Unfortunately I don't think my hubby would ever allow me to eat sushi no matter how much data I show him that it's safe. We have a problem here in the states, the guidelines are so strict and americans are such busybodies that they enforce those rules on you. I wouldn't be surprised if I sat down at a sushi restaurant with a preggo belly and some perfect stranger came up to me to tell me that I shouldn't be eating that. It used to happen all the time when I was smoking (not during pregnancy), americans come right up to you and say "that's bad for you!"

What's even more confusing is that health and sanitation regulations in the US are forcefully enforced so I would have no qualms about eating sushi, but like I said hubby would have a heart attack.
