Early scan: gestational and yolk sac present, but no embryo :-(. Advice needed!
Hello ladies, I got my first ever BFP on Friday 18 March. Saw my GP on Monday 21 March and she booked me in for an early scan because of the following:
1. trying for 20 months
2. been on clomid
3. my last period (14 Feb approx) was really weird as there was no bleeding, just brown CM/discharge
4. had some spotting around when my period was due, just pale brown CM/discharge
5. not sure about this, but she did ask me and I said I just didn't feel pregnant!
So I went for my scan today and it was an internal one. They put my LMP down as when I had my last 'proper' bleed on 20 Jan which would make me approx 9 weeks. The sonographer could see a gestational sac and yolk sac, but on the letter to my GP it says 'embryo absent ! She didn't tell us when we were looking at the screen she couldn't see any evidence of a baby.
This is what my letter to my GP says:
LMP unsure, but they have dated my last period as 20.01.2011
Gestational age by dates: 8w + 6d
Early pregnancy assessment: Gestational sac (GS) present; GS size 9mm x 5mm x 7mm; yolk sac present; embryo absent.
GS mean = 7mm, Gs vol = 0.2ml, yolk sac mean = 2.1mm.
It goes on to talk about my ovaries being clearly seen and everything else looks normal. Then it says "possibly a very early pregnancy - rescan in 7-10 days".
So I'm booked in again on 5 April (2 wks) and I am praying to God that the little embryo appears and has a heart beat by then. I've tried doing some research this morning and it seems to be normal to see very little at this stage, but if I'm honest I was hoping we would see something other than an empty looking sac. Feeling a little down about it...has anyone had a super early scan and gone on to have a healthy little embryo appear two weeks later?!?!?!?!?!?!
Any advice would be appreciated. I do realise that this might turn into nothing, but I just don't want to have to start all over again as we've waited soooo long for this and I was starting to enjoy it.
Hi hun, I had an early scan at 5+4 and the sonographer could only see the yolk sac. Then 10 days later at 7 + 1, the heartbeat was detected. I know it is easier said but try not to worry, it is quite early at 5 weeks to see the embryo I would say... hugs, Lucia
My first advice is to make sure you wait and get a 2nd opinion before doing anything. Sometimes they just don't show up on scans that early. Look up about mis-diagnosed blighted ovums and you will see what I mean. I read this after my d&c for my blighted ovum and wished I had waited (at peace with it now but at the time it was an extra thing to deal with)
Also, how confident are you with your dates? Do you have an idea of when you ovulated? If so I would go with those dates and not the LMP dates. They may insist on LMP dates as some medical people can't accept that some women don't have 28 day cycles but going from O day is more accurate.
Once again so sorry you have to go through this. I hope it turns out to be nothing and next scan shows a little baby.
Aw sorry to hear you're going through this anxious time. Relax and try not to worry, so hard but distract yourself and just stay calm. I get light periods all the time, when i'm having a stressful time, so it looks like they got your dates wrong for lmp perhaps xxxx
I'm in exactly the same boat, early scan this morning (due to brown spotting last few days and mmc last time) dated me at 5 ish weeks (right because I ovulated late) and they could only see a sac and an 'echo' inside it, i have to go back in 2 weeks for a re-scan, then it will be all or nothing. This happened in my last pregnancy and i spent the whole 2 weeks in bed stressing, this time I'm going back to work and am going to try to forget about it all till my next scan
Thanks babydeacon! I see you are a Croydon girly; I grew up in Croydon! Where abouts are you? I was Thornton Heath and went to St. Mary's.
It's reassuring that others have had exactly the same or very similar experience so I'm less anxious now. I just hope that there is something more to see on the next scan. FX'd there will be a heartbeat.
Oh thats worrying, poor you
Im 5 weeks and I think even if Id had problems Id refuse an early scan purely because nearly everything Ive read says its too early to detect baby. Heartbeat isnt there till 7 weeks and I wouldnt want to be worried. I hope you are ok and that when you go back in a couple of weeks all is well. HUGS
Ooh, and here's the scan piccie. Sorry it's a bit blurry.
I think I see something, but I'm no expert and the experts don't see anything . This is gonna be a loooooooong two week wait, but as long as I see something on the next scan I won't mind one little bit (admittedly I will be upset if there is nothing there).
Location: Originally from Newcastle now in Lincolnshire, UK
I had a scan at the beginning of January where they could only see that my uterus was enlarged and nothing else and refused to believe I was pregnant. But I definitely was and the scan lady had said she believe it was just a very early pregnancy at the time and she was right. Fingers crossed for you hun x
