BHR trust-Queens Hospital...another incident :-(

My local hospital has been in the news recently due to their awful level of care, a lady gave birth in the waiting room and despite telling staff baby was coming she was ignored and the baby boy hit his head on the floor as he came out as there were no staff around to catch him.

Today in the paper they have admitted responsibilty for a still birth and the mum passing away. It was lack of oxygen to the brain as they didn't notice the oxygen mask wasn't attached to the cylinder!! After an emergency c section they both died.

These aren't the only stories I've heard in the last few months and the BBC reported there have been quite a few incidences. I had a really bad time with the birth of my DS and there are a couple of factors that means I will be under consultant care from 16 weeks and I'm terrified of having to give birth there.

Does anyone know if you're able to change hospitals?

Yeah I'm sure you're allowed, although not sure how you'd go about it. Maybe contact the hospital you want to move to and ask them?

That'd scare the life out of me too.

I just dont know if they will do it as I'm sure I won't be the only one requesting a transfer. I can't ask my midwife for another 3 weeks as I don't gave my booking appt till then.

They just seem to be doing something wrong every month...it's scary! They're the only maternity unit in three boroughs!

Oh this has scared me too - luckily my local hospital is Basildon rather than Queen's. But when I first fell pregnant I did consider Queen's because you are allowed to pick your hospital. Since I've seen everything on the news about the hospital I thought dear God I'm with the right place.
However, since you are allowed to choose you must be able to transfer. It might be an idea to talk to your next choice of hospital and ask how you would go about it?

Sadly, every hospital will probably have a story like this to tell.

The little baby who is buried next to my daughter, died due to hospital Negligence. I was so worried when I was pregnant again from this, but his Dad assured me that because of all the bad publicity from his Sons death, that the hospital was probably the safest its ever been, as they'd be taking extra care nothing like that should happen again. It did reassureme a little.

I think you can request to change your hospita, ask your m/w xx

Basildon would def be the choice for me even if it is quite a drive away as they've had such good reports and a low incidence of c sections. The only problem I can see with Basildon is my DS...it's a long drive for visiting and he may have school when I go in. In sure I'm thinking too far ahead...I just dont wanna be in that hospital, after what happened with DS I'm nervous enough as it is and that was the midwives fault last time.

I might look into king georges.

Well I think the scary thing about Queens is that it is literally incident after incident at the moment being reported. And what I really didn't like was the almost blase way someone who worked there (can't remember her title) treated it when the BBC spoke to her. It was almost like it wasn't that bid a deal. That made me wonder whether they were doing enough to correct the problems.
The lady who died mentioned in this thread was left to labour on her own for two and a half hours with no-one checking on her, and she ruptured her womb. I know there are stories of medical negligence all over the place, but the rate coming out of Queens is scary.

Only issue with King Georges is it's closing - not sure when, but it's being closed due to cutbacks. Which is why there's a bit of uproar at the moment. Pregnant mums are very unhappy that they're losing King Georges, when Queens is letting so many down and remains open.

Hi loraloo, so sorry to hear about your loss.

I know all hospitals have these stories but queens are quite frequent at the moment, they are under quite a few investigations. I can def see the logic in what the man was saying, they will have to watch their back now.

Hopefully by November a few changes will be in place!

I remember there was another Hospital all over the news not long back, responsible for the death of so many people. It makes you wonder how the Hospital is still left to carry on taking in patients doesnt it

Thank You xxx
