taking xanax while preg..

Hi everyone this is my first posting I am 7 weeks pregnant and have severe anxiety that I have been diagnosed with for the last 10 years. I am currently taking 1mg of xanax 2x's a day and am worried/concerned if it is ok? My psychiatrist says that it is and in small doses my pregnancy will be fine. I' just scared of the "what-ifs".. If anyone knows anything about taking this medicine or the possible effects it may cause? ANYTHING please help. Thanks

I heard that it's not good from some people, and then okay from others. I was on Klonopin, which is pretty similar to Xanax. I have stopped taking it until I talk to my Dr. just to be safe. Hasn't done any good for my anxiety though! I've been pretty much stuck in the house, because it's always in public that I get my severe anxiety. I think it would really help with my nausea too.

I found this:

Xanax® (alprazolam) is generally considered dangerous for pregnant women. It is part of a group of medications known as benzodiazepines. Human and animal studies have shown that benzodiazepine use during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects and other problems.

Pregnancy Category D is given to medicines that have shown clear evidence of risk to the fetus in studies. Pregnancy Category D is a stronger warning than a pregnancy Category C or B classification. A pregnancy Category D medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to the unborn child.

Xanax was given a pregnancy Category D rating because of problems seen in animal and human studies. Benzodiazepine use during early pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects, while use during later pregnancy can cause withdrawal symptoms in a newborn.

However, you should not stop taking Xanax without your healthcare provider's approval -- even if you are pregnant -- due to the risk of dangerous withdrawal symptoms

I would not recommend taking any type of anti-depressants while pregnant. There's no way I would chance it. Talk to your doctor about it and see if there's anything "natural" that you can take instead, at least during the pregnancy.

Good Luck to you!

Arsenic is natural. Natural is not always good for you. And Xanax is not an antidepressant.

I know a woman who followed the "don't take anything while pregnant" rule, and then ended up attempting suicide at 22 weeks, and that suicide attempt killed her baby. For some people, antidepressants and antianxieties aren't optional. Yes, there's always a risk to the baby. But being suicidally depressed or agoraphobically anxious are just as risky to your baby.

more info on xanax

Thanks everyone for your support. I've spoken to my doctor and went over some statistics with him there is a really good book that was published about taking Xanax and it looks like I should be fine. I'm just scared of hurting my baby I love her/him so much already. Is there anyone on here currently taking Xanax? Or has in previous pregnancies? Very curiosity in my 7th week L*

I was on xanax and Lexapro when I got pregnant (not trying at the time) with my 1st pregnancy. My Dr advised me to come of both meds asap. It was hell coming off cold turkey and I ended up having a M/C anyway (probably not from the meds I was taking, I was only 5 weeks at the time and had other things going on too). But if you have discussed it with your Dr and don't feel comfortable with what he/she has told you I would get a second opinion just to be sure. I can only tell you what I was told and that could be different to other docs.

I'm not on Xanax, but I do take temazepam (another benzodiazapene) for sleep, and I'm still taking it on occasion with this one. I'm severely bipolar, and a lack of sleep is far more dangerous than drugs to me.

A second opinion is never a bad idea though. Good luck to you!

Thank you for this thread. I was taking Xanax everyday until I found out I was pregnant, then stopped abruptly. I tried not taking any until my doc appt, but one day felt I needed to take at least half to keep me sane. When I finally saw the doc he made me feel sooo scared and guilty for taking just that half of one that I still worry about it and beat myself up over it and imagine the worst possible scenarios. (I decided after that to change doctors). Obviously nothing is a guarantee, but if some doctors wean their patients off slowly, then why did I get the guilt treatment for taking the one half?

Anyway I hope you find what works for you and am glad your doctr is storming with you, anxiety is not easy to live with
