8 wks+5 but first scan showed baby just 6wks? :(

hi everyone, this is my first time writing on one of these forums but i have been reading through it a lot over the past few weeks

im a young enough mum to be, il be just 22 the end of next month, so i guess i dont have a lot of experience when it comes to knowing what to expect or whats normal!!

so yesterday i went for a early scan as i was having slight cramping and iv been quiet sick since finding out. my mum has had loads of problems ; etopic pregnancys, 3 miscarraiges and now she only has one FT left, so im guessing due to family history they wanted to keep an extra eye one me.

Both my doctor and I were dating me to be just over 8 weeks with my LMP being the 7th of OCT 11, i didnt understand the 2 weeks add on at first but after it was explained to me we excepted we wer at 8 weeks +

while having my scan yesterday the UST kept asking me was i sure of my dates which i am as i have the pink pad on my iphone. she said she couldnt see much so i had to have a transvaginal instead. Once in she said that she was hoping to have seen a lot more, as the pregnancy is only measuring up to be 5-6 weeks, we could see embryo but unfortunately no HB. she said to be honest she could not be sure what to tell me, as anyone would be unsure, looking at what she had seen.

i have to go in one week on the 14th to see if baby has grown and wether there is a HB, she said its either one or two things; i have my dates a little mixed up which i definitely dont or the baby stopped growing at 6 weeks.

im just really confused as me and my partner had UI on the 18th and 20th of OCT which is when i was predicting ovulation. we were then apart from each other until i found out i was pregnant, can anyone shed some light on this, or has anyone experienced the same thing??
hugs to all xxxxxxxxxx

I'm really sorry to say that I experienced almost exactly the same thing in my first pregnancy (scan at 8 weeks, dated at 6 with very very slow heartbeat) and unfortunately it was not good news. I knew that my dates were not mixed up.

There is always some hope though, but the only thing that can give you the answer will be the next scan. I'm afraid I wouldn't be getting your hopes up too much though. It won't be because you have done something wrong and it won't mean there is anything wrong with you. Often it is unfortunately just one of those horrible bad luck situations.

Sorry to hear your scan didn't go so well. I also had the same thing happen to me, I was 8+2 (very certain as like you I knew my dates) and they said the baby only measured 6 weeks and no HB. They also did transvaginal and didn't get anything either. They said they would rescan me in two weeks but after 4 days, I started getting brown spotting and it was all over. I hope your story works out better for you xx

Thanks for the replies ladies, I guess I just have to keep the fingers crossed and hope for the best. My pregnancy wasn't exactly planned, but both my partner and I would be completely devastated now if anything happened. well it's 3 days on and no cramping or spotting still very queasy and feeling pregnant, so hopefully the 14 th brings good news xxxx
