Zofran / Ondansetron, anyone?

So this is the deal... An Emergency Room doctor prescribed Zofran for me (anti-vomitting medication)... I asked if it was safe during pregnancy and he said yes. I checked with the pharmacist and she say yes. So I have been taking it for 6 weeks now (since my ER visit at 7 weeks). It definitely helps... but yesterday I read on Wikipedia that "It is also used off-label to treat hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnant women, but there is no conclusive data available on its safety in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester."

WTF???? I am so freaked out now because they told me it was safe but they really don't know if it's safe!!! I didn't use it today, thus the vomitting thread I started separately from this, because I am so freaked out. Anyone remember the thalidomide horrors???

Does anyone else have experience with taking Zofran / Ondansetron while pregnant? Did your babies turn out normally? I know it's no guarantee but I am worried sick about this now.

I haven't taken it but I hear a lot of women use it for severe morning sickness. I believe it is safe. Don't always trust Wikipedia, that is the site that people can go in and edit information themselves. I just googled it and it is categorized as FDA category B. That means it is considered safe. If you are still concerned, I would talk to your doctor and see what your options are.

Oh btw I was diganosed with hyperemesis and thats why i took it. i first took in orally then when i had a picc line inserted i gave it through the iv. My kids were born 2months early but it had nothing to do with that medication. Its a class B which is safe during pregnancy. FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Keep taking it hun and dont worry.

If the sickness is that bad and stopped but now returned because you ceased then I would start taking it again. It is cat B and is safe and better than being sick all the time. If you are worried then check with your doctor again. Hope it sorts out. Take care XX

Thanks everyone... my husband was begging me to take it today... now I am at work and am ready to vomit any minute but I don't have the medicine with me. I can't stand this. I will take it tomorrow. Today has been hell. I actually thought that maybe things were getting better and I didn't need it... now I know it WAS helping...

It will do more harm to your baby if you are vomiting all the time and dehydrated and losing nutrients than if you are taking this medication (which really is supposed to be safe so don't worry!) I'm glad that it does help you. Take it and enjoy your pregnancy the most you can! Hope you feel better asap.

Yes just like Meggem said..it will do more harm to your baby....also you. You will become dehyrated which will cause contractions which can end in preterm labor. Also your boby starts to eat up stored fat cells which is no good for you. As well as you lose nutrietents and when you become dehyrated and all this your postassium level can drop dangeroulsy low..and potassium is key to your heart. Take your meds and you will feel better then you do now.

I wanted to mention that i work in the er and we prescribe Zofran to many pregnant women, and I've given it to them through the iv...and i call tell you I would never give a drug if it wasnt safe.

Take care and I hope this passes soon.
