Newly pregnant and bleeding...help!

A little bit of background:

TTC#1 for 7 months but have been going through tests as I spot each month for about a week before AF. For the past three months I've started spotting from around 4dpo right up until AF, getting heavier as I get closer. The doctor carried out a cd21 test, all fine. She then referred me for a transvaginal scan (on Monday) to check for polyps/fibroids/endo etc. But as my period was due at the weekend, she told me to start taking Norethisterone (a pill that delays your period), three days before my period started. So I took them on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This cycle I started spotting at 4dpo and was still spotting even with the pills.

When I got to the hospital on Monday they had screwed up and I had a full bladder scan instead of a transvaginal scan, so I didn't even need the pills! (PS the u/s technician said she couldn't see any polyps/fibroids etc)

Well, I continued spotting and for some reason I took a pregnancy test yesterday - even though I knew it was almost impossible due to the spotting. Well, I got a BFP! I used internet dip strips, supermarket tests, FRER and Clearblue Digital. ALL POSITIVE!

However, the spotting continued (TMI: mainly brown, sometimes stringy, sometimes red/brown watery). Today, I have more red/brown watery spotting and it's definitely heavier than before (although there's no flow to it like a period and mainly when I go to the toilet - although enough to wear a panty liner). I know that Norethisterone can cause a withdrawal bleed but I've heard this shouldn't happen if I'm pregnant. Also, HPTs are still reading positive today.

I'm hoping to get an appointment with the doctor but I was wondering if anyone else has had bleeding at this stage and if it worked out? Also, what would you class as spotting and what would you class as bleeding? I know realistically it doesn't look good...

I want this baby so much

I'm not sure about the medication but I did have some bleeding at about 5 weeks.. I went to the ER and the quantitative hcg was only 91.. they had me do an u/s the next day and the tech didnt see anything and started saying it was probably a false positive! well i went to my doc a few days later to get rechecked and the OB saw a fetal pole and hcg went up to 233.. however I had more spotting around 7-8 weeks.. my OB has me going in every two weeks because of all the spotting.. but so far everything is okay.. when i went to the ER it was red blood, so I considered it bleeding.. and when it happened again it was brown (i was told that when its brown that its old blood), but still wasn't soaking panty liners.. I try not to stress but sometimes it's sooo hard!!!! The best advice I have is to keep your head up and to try to relax! I had a loottt of spotting through december but so far the little one is still growing!

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I hope I have a similar experience with good news to report. Can I ask, did they give you any reason for the spotting? Or did they put it down to being just 'one of those things'? I wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy and hope that there'll be no further spotting for you.

My OB said she couldn't see any reason for the spotting so it must have just been 'one of those things'. it stresses me out that she still wants to do viability scans every two weeks though, but she says it's so we don't miss anything.. I didn't think pregnancy would be sooo stressful (it's still way worth it though!) I know I'm not out of the woods yet, but I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed! are you going to try and get in soon with your doc? I hope they can get you in soon, but normally they should if your having any bleeding! Waiting is ALWAYS so hard!!!! sending sticky bean dust your way!!!!!

Thanks! I know what you mean about the stress. I've always been a spotter and assumed that when I was pregnant it would stop. I'm hoping I can get an appointment with the doctor today. I'll go crazy otherwise. I'm also not sure how I should be feeling as never been pregnant before. I have a weird feeling in my tummy, not cramps but more like a stretchy/full kind of feeling. Did you have anything like that?

And please don't worry about your fortnightly scans, I think it's great that they are keeping such a close eye on you and making sure everything is going well. Besides, you've made it this far which is a sure sign that your little bean is not planning on going anywhere!

Honestly, I didn't think I was pregnant!! I was on clomid but since my hubby is deployed we had one month to conceive during his r&r. luckily I got a + OPK on the very last day we were together!!! We talk online and after me taking like 5 HPT's (before my expected period) and seeing them all come back extremely negative I didn't think it happened. but he begged me to get one more test and I tested the day after I missed my period and got my BFP! At first, I was only getting menstrual like cramping and have been extremely exhausted.. feels like I'm running a marathon everyday! I do get a stretching like feeling too, which I also hear is normal.. I've seen it called "round ligament pain" so I'm guessing that's what it is!

and yeah, it is very reassuring that they are keeping such a close eye on the baby and not just brushing everything off! Also, I am happy I get to see the little one so often!!

I really hope you can get in today!!! let me know how your appointment goes!! I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you!
Has your bleeding/spotting stopped?
if you call and they tell you that the spotting is normal, let them know that you are really worried and really want to be seen!

Thanks for all of your advice yesterday, it really meant a lot to me. I wish I had something more concrete to update you with but I'm still pretty much in the same boat. Still spotting, just the same. How long did it take for your spotting to stop?

The good news is that I got an appointment with the doctor yesterday and told her I had a positive pregnancy test. She said congratulations and I burst into floods of tears! I told her I was spotting/bleeding and that I had been for around 10 days. before, during and after BFP). She explained that lots of women spot early in their pregnancy and it could just be normal but said that as I had experienced spotting/bleeding that it meant I was a 'threatened miscarriage'. She said it's a 50/50 chance and that for now I should just rest and take it easy. She called the Early Pregnancy Unit and booked me in for a scan at the end of the month. If I'm able to hold on to the pregnancy till then I'll be six weeks and still really early for a scan but she explained they should be able to see that the sac etc is in the right place.

She also told me not to worry if the bleeding gets worse and I do miscarry (easier said than done), because at least now I know everything is in order and that hopefully there'll be a next time. But not to lose hope for now. Today, I'm still spotting/bleeding but it seems to be about the same as yesterday and still having no cramps. So trying to keep as positive as possible - though, it's not easy. I dread every trip to the bathroom. I can only imagine you've felt the same way?

When is your next scan due?

Thanks again for being there for me yesterday

Hi,

I also have spotting for a week leading up to AF and had the same both cycles before getting my BFP. Unfortunately first time round when they did HCG tests my numbers weren't doubling and it did eventually end in miscarriage however it happened again this time, and I started spotting at around 4.5 weeks including some bright red blood and my HCG tests have come back fine. My spotting has now stopped after about 2 separate weeks of it and I have an early scan this morning to check all is ok!! I'm feeling positive due to my HCG tests - have they sent you for any?

Thanks Rachelkt. I'm sorry to hear about your first m/c - how far along were you?

I'm glad you've had a much more positive experience this time and I hope your first scan this morning goes really well. No, the doctor hasn't sent me for HCG tests yet - not sure why? But I do have my scan in 11 days.

Let me know how your scan goes.
