I can't help but feel that it was a negative scan, even though it's early, there was an appropriate sized sack and yolk etc. It was an abdominal scan and I am really overweight. I asked for transvaginal but the tech said "that's up to me to decide"!

I keep thinking that I saw Thomas and his heartbeat at 5w4d last time.

He said come back in a week and there will be a baby with a heartbeat, that everything looked good, but I think he was just trying to be opptomistic for my sake.

Sorry, just feeling sad now . I KNOW it's normal for 6 weeks. I'm being silly.

It's always disappointing when you don't see what you are expecting. Especially when it was different with your first one. You were lucky to see anything on an abdominal scan that early! It sounds perfectly healthy to me! Good Luck!!

Thanks! I'm glad I didn't go a week ago when my doctor wanted me to.

I looked on google and the sack measurements put me at exactly 6 weeks today, so I'm thinking that's a good sign.

Now I have to wait ANOTHER week haha, ugh, I'd forgotten about all the waiting of pregnancy.

With DD2 I had a scan at 6 weeks 1 day and the tech couldn't see much abdominally. As soon as she tried the vaginal scan she saw gest sac, yolk sac and 4mm fetal pole with visible heartbeat. The fact that you saw a good deal just with the abdominal scan at 6 weeks I think is a really good sign. Dont know why they didnt give you a vaginal scan though. xxx

Thanks for that, very reassuring. I don't know why he wouldn't do it either, perhaps I made him uncomfortable with my weight and he didn't want to probe me? . He was super serious, not even a smile or a hello.

i went for a scan this week and i was 6 weeks .
but shocker for me i was carrying twins .
but ultrasound only showed to sacs with yolks no heartbeats or even a fetal poles but ive got to go back in 10 days for another scan. who knows u might be less weeks than you thourt . apparantly it is quite common for you not to see a heartbeat or fetus this early . i should no spent whole week looking up previous posts and lots of women av been in the same situation . got my next scan on 27th hoping to see 2 healthy heartbeats and i really hope all goes well for you to ill keep my eyes open for an update xx

I'm going for a scan tomorrow, and I highly doubt I will see much via abdominal. Try not to worry!! I'm sure everything is fine!!

Thanks everyone. I'm actually feeling very happy and confident with the scan results now, after researching what can normally be seen on an abdominal scan this early. I actually saw a lot!

I had a "mean sac diameter" (average of the 3 measurements he took) of 11.43mm. And I found this chart:

Important points for a viable pregnancy
For a trans-vaginal scan

when the MSD measures 8 mm - a yolk sac should be visible
when the MSD measures 16 mm - a fetal heart rate should be detected
when the MSD measures 16 mm - a fetal pole should be seen (20 mm by ASUM criteria)

For a trans-abdominal scan

when the MSD measures 20 mm - a yolk sac should be visible
when the MSD measures 25 mm - a fetal heart rate should be detected
when the MSD measures 25 mm - a fetal pole should be visible

So seeing the sac and yolk at 11.43mm was pretty great for an abdominal scan.

And if you add the MSD + 30, that's one way of estimating how far along you are in days. 11+30 puts me at 41 days since LMP, which makes me 6 weeks today just as I estimated.

So I guess so far, so good.
