Might be twins??!

I had an ultrasound yesterday at 7 weeks and 3 days to find the heartbeat. We had a trainee doing our scan. The trainee saw it at a rate of 156! He pointed out the head and the feet of our bean so we could see it too. While he was showing us I noticed another shape inside the sac right beside it and was wondering what that was since I could see the shape of our bean perfectly. After a few moments of looking around he asked if I had a family history of twins to which I admitted I was a twin and both our families had a couple of sets! He said there was a possibility there were twins but he'd need to get his supervisor to have a look. After about ten minutes of trying to see from all different angles he said he was fairly confident there was just the one (but he didn't seem confident!). He gave us a photoe and sent us on our way never speaking to a supervisor or anyone at all. I felt sure he was right about there being only one but my mother told me she didn't know I was in there until 25 weeks because I was hiding behind my sister and my heartbeat echoed hers Now I'm confused and wish I had have demanded a supervisor check. Will my doctor be able to hear another heartbeat later on using a doppler? I've got months untill I'll have another ultrasound and I realy want to know!! what do you think?

How exciting!!! Perhaps go back and explain the situation? i.e. we had a trainee, he thought it might be twins and we just want to double check. Do they let you do that?

Thanks for replying I can't stop thinking about this! no they didn't reschedule so I don't know what to think He did say he thought there was only one and I wish I had have been more insistent but I was a little overwhelmed! Im not keen to go back as I've been there twice now (once at 5weeks 3 days) and I'm only 7 weeks 4 days now. I was happy to take his oppinion and think there was only 1 but the more I think about it the more I start to doubt. All three of us saw the second shape and he never did say what it was if not a twin. I don't know if I should just let it go and trust him or do somthing to find out for sure. What should I do?? Maybe I could talk to my doctor about it but she's complained I've gone in to often for how far I am (but she never called me with my results!). I have to go in at 12 weeks so I might have to wait untill then. Has anyone ever had a twin suspicion that turned out to be correct in a situation like this? Please let me know how your results turn out! I'm very curious

Are you sure you werent looking at the yolk sac? Twins can be heard on a doppler but its hard to distinguish. I heard my LOs HB in the chord and placenta as well so it sounded like there were 2 or 3 in there. An u/s is the only way to really tell.

my aunty's pregnant with twins + i know at a 12 week appt they had a doppler on her i think it's just a case of what to look out for, with her it was more of an 'echoey' heartbeat and if the intensity of the heartbeat doesn't change when you move the doppler from one side of your tummy to the other. it just depends on which way they're lying i think congrats if it is twins!

I'd just wait till your 12 week if they didn't reschedule you for another ultrasound. It could have been the yoke sac. Twins within the same sac are pretty rare. 12 weeks seems like far off but it will go by fast!

Twins in the same sac are also not the type of twins that are hereditary. You get hereditary twins from hyper ovulating which is when you release more than one egg and you get this from your mother. It happened to me. Twins in the same sac are spontaneous.

Thanks everyone for your advice I'll just wait untill my 12 week appointment. I'm an identical twin and I know that isn't a genetic thing but there is still a high amount of them in our families. We don't have any sets from multiple ovulation so perhaps the 'unknown' thing that causes them is somehow more common in some families?? In fact my mother got pregnant twice with identical twins and she only had 3 pregnancies all up! sadly the second set didn't make it due to complications but it still seems a little more then chance right? I know certain races have far lower incidents of identical twins then others which is also interesting. As for the second shape being the yolk sac etc wouldn't my technician have known that instantly? I'm still confused but I'm just putting it out of my mind for a few weeks untill I can find out. I'd be happy to have just the one since it's my first and I'm sure to be overwhelmed as it is! What ever the outcome we'll be thrilled Thanks everyone for helping you've given me a bit to think about
