Working as a carer...Advice plz

Hey ladies, right now I'm working 30-35 hours a week as a care worker in a nursing home, my work is pretty intense with lots of manual handling... are any of you ladies in the same position? Should I still be working there? Am I safe to continue working and until when? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You should let your work know. I have done care work and my friend is also a carer and 16 weeks pregnat. They are obliged to keep you safe and not force you to do manual handling that could strain or hurt you. I know my friend has been put onto duties where the people don't need lifting and just require light assistance.

Thank you so much for that! We have two parts to our nursing home, high care and low care so may be moved into low care... I think I shall go and have a chat with my manager and see what she thinks! she should understand being a clinical nurse and all! Thanks again.

i am a home carer rather than residential, i am 9 weeks pregnant (found out when i was 5 weeks) asked the office ever since to take me out of high risk calls where the clients can be aggressive and all i keep getting back from them is "what proof do we have that youre pregnant?"
after a 4 week wait i finally have one of the seniors coming out tomorrow to do a risk assessment (and not before time) xx

My friend is 39 weeks now and she always worked as a nurse aid at a nursing home. I would just ask your work for help with lifting people/things. Goodluck to you. Listen to your body at all times =)

Hey hun, I was a personal carer too and only recently finished my Enrolled Nursing, but sitll work in Aged Care. I work with 3 pregnant carers and they say they are doing ok, so i think you will be fine.
But it's very important that you do things properly, like having two carers with all residents that need two carers, all the proper manual handling techniques and avoid aggressive residents.. Try minimal lifting, but i'm assuming you have machinery there to help with lifting etc??

Just don't push yourself, and always ask for help if you feel uncomfortable, watch out for YOU and baby and if you're in doubt, get help!

A girl i work with recently went on mat leave at about 30-34 weeks, all the best hun!! Hopefully you will get moved to low care, that will be a lot easier on you xoxox

I've almost finished my enrolled nursing too, halfway through my last unit, should be graduated and qualified in June I'll have a chat with my manager today and see what she says there's a couple of aggressive residents I may have to avoid if I stay in high care :/
