I dont really have anything to say about actually smoking it but it is illigal to buy and pocess. Having drug and drug dealers anywhere around your kids is not the best thing for them. Until it is legalized its probably best to figure out another solution.

I personally don't understand why you would TTC before getting your bipolar disorder under control and in check. Using illegal drugs to self-medicate is NOT helping you get better. Do you see a therapist/psychiatrist? You need to speak to a medial professional about this and get some help and advice about actually treating your condition the right way. You need to be mentally stable for your baby.

This is a great idea! I was thinking along these lines.

I don't get why your condition is being used as an excuse here? Plenty other ladies have the same but battle on without the weed!

I will also add, it's all very well people telling you they did it and had healthy babies, but what if one day, like me, (god forbid) your child arrives early and requires intensive care? Taking weed will not have contributed to the child's health and strength at such a small gestation. Believe me, the guilt of smoking about 4 cigarettes the week my 27 Weeker was born was soul destroying.

I dont think anyone suggested that you cant care for a child if you are bipolar or have any other illness. Im not anti drugs (well not this class of drug anyway) but I dont get how someone who is under the influence would be able to look after a baby as effectively. As someone who has smoked alot of cannabis/grass I know how it changes your thinking, reactions , awareness etc and whilst Im not suggesting that the OP or anyone else wont be a good parent I dont believe for one minute that the aforemention (reactions, awareness etc) would be at the same level as someone who hasnt been smoking marijuana.) Yes, you appear less stoned that someone who has the odd spliff because your body is used to it but it still affects your brain/body. Its also a known depressant. x

no, no, no, no i just cant condone it. I think it's wrong to be a mother and do anything illegal esp. drugs.

It is illegal , and you could get a dodgy batch or anything and then where would you be?!

I cannot believe anyone is defending you here. You CANNOT smoke marijuana while you are responsible for someone elses life. If you cant control your body and yourself then imho you shouldn't have gotten pregnant. It is just wrong.

You are also making excuses, you said you smoke it before work so you dont get annoyed at some customers, well excuse me , but what do you think the rest of us do at work?!

I'm sure I'll get slated for thinking the baby should come first but seriously there's other ways to sort yourself rather than smoking an illegal substance that could harm your baby.

First of all, having had a boyfriend who 'self medicated' with weed and having been someone who got into the habit of smoking on a daily basis, I really am skeptical about the benefits of weed for mental health. However, the op knows herself more than we do so I'm not going to post here to be judgmental. All I would say is that any type of smoking is of course not ideal, however I also know that eating pot does not have quite the same effect. Also, I've been involved in some research on THC and what i would worry about is what it does to the developing nervous system. I really do sympathise with people who have complicated health issues when pregnant though- it's no fun being unable to take your usual medication. Has the op tried going without smoking in pregnancy yet by the way? You never knOw what might happen to your condition with pregnancy hormones kicking around- you never know, it might improve?

Also agree with lisa1986.

I also suffer from bipolar disorder and have NEVER self medicated, I only take what is deemed appropriate and safe for me personally and then I am monitored carefully by my psychiatrist, and I have stopped it completely in pregnancy, my baby is more important than ANYTHING right now, including myself. I think using your condition as an excuse is absolutely disgusting, there is enough stigma attached to mental health issues as it is.

Also, I do not believe for a moment that any health professional told you it was better you be on that than legal prescribed medicine, they'd be struck off for a start!

When I think of all these women that can't get pregnant or miscarry when they're doing everything they can to protect their baby and there you are smoking illegal drugs. What if you were to now miscarry (god forbid), how would you live with the guilt?!

Also, children DIE from asthma, it is not a condition to be taken lightly!

IMO, you should never have gotten pregnant if you can't give up the drugs, and you should definitely not be in care of any child when under the influence of drugs.

ANY medication (weed is medicinal, just not in the uk i dont think?) That your doctor knows about while you are pregnant and is given the go ahead is Ok. They will make sure that any extra precautions are taken to ensure baby and YOU are ok during this pregnancy, just like anyone who is on any other medication.
