OMGosh! I would have cried right there on the spot. I'm so sorry that happened! I would definitely change Dr's, I would just feel uncomfortable with him after that. Sorry.

Hmm this is probably why I couldn't hear the heartbeat at my 11 weeks...although he never said anything about my weight! Yours should have just said it was too early.

If you go to a bulk billing doc, yep it means I pay nothing for that consultation However, I pay my taxes and therefore I still technically pay. Although there are plenty of people here that don't pay taxes and also don't pay for their healthcare (don't even get me started lol).
And a patient always deserves an explanation In this thread, I do believe she got one. Maybe not in the most tactful way, but she got a perfectly relevant reason for not doing the test.
I wanna come live were you live. I'll pay taxes I swear!!! I wish we had that here.

If you read over my previous replies you'll see that I agree with everything everyone said
* All people deserve respect - big, small, short, tall, black, white etc.
* There are some bad eggs (I've had them professionally and as a patient!!)
* You absolutely have the right to move on
* Communication is the key - but this is a two way street

I just find it disheartening that I never see a thread with the title "Today I had a wonderful experience with my doctor/midwife/nurse/sonnographer/butcher/baker/candle-stick maker/sales assistant/cashier"

The reason I'm also quite vocal about this is that I'm trying to show people that just because they deny a certain test doesn't make for a bad doctor. Coming back to the original point of this entire thread - did the OP simply ask the doc to try regardless? Or did she expect him to be a mind-reader? Most docs are open to questions (and those who aren't SHOULD BE) and therefore if there's doubt or she'd be more upset by NOT listening rather than not finding the HB, then let him/her know. If he then says no, then he's being a douche

I'm also scared that women who are already on the fence about seeing a practitioner about something they consider mild or unimportant won't seek help because they're afraid they'll be dismissed. Forums are abnormally skewed towards terrible medical help rather than the truth that most doctors will welcome you no matter how small your concern.
I already do that. Dr's make me nervous. I had an OB that was so rude to me instead of make an appointment I removed my own IUD after watching a medical video of it being done on youtube (it actually wasn't that hard.I was very poor at the time and didn't have insurance or the money to pay in full for the removal)

I have also had two really great OB's that I adored and was really sad to leave. If it were not so far away I would go back to one of them for this pregnancy but both are over 2 hours away. My best friend is an RN and has given me a great respect for nurses and Dr's that do their job and treat people with respect. If I am annoyed with a Dr or nurse I usually try to speak to them like I would speak to her to remind myself that they are people too. That way if I am misunderstanding or taking something the wrong way I give themselves a chance to either fix it or dig a deeper hole but at least I know where I stand. It may be an overtired or missed lunch with a super busy day and didn't mean to rush me or they may just be a crappy person but at least I usually walk away feeling like I tried to make the best of the situation.

Hehe, you're most welcome Australia is pretty awesome all around although accommodation is one of the most expensive world wide and car prices are inflated so much we'd considered moving to the US

And thanks for your other reply too

HI there, i dont know how far along you are, but your doctor is full of it, if the heart beat cannot be detected though the abdomen, you do TV unltasound (trans vaginal) in the early weeks it doesnt matter how skinny or fat you are an abdominal ultrasound will not usually be able to detect a heart beat. I think he may be acting unprofessionally and possibly unethically. Do babies of overweight mothers deserve less than adequate treatment? If he offered you a TV untrasound and you refused he should have tried abdominal, if that failed he cant be blamed, but if he did not try or offer you a TV, then i think he has not offered you the best and most appropriate service.

It was a doppler check, not an ultrasound. Not all doctors have ultrasound machines in their offices, nor will they refer people for ultrasounds if it's not deemed necessary.

Tha may be the case, but if it is usual practice to detect a herat beat, then a woman and her baby should not be discriminated against due to how much weight she carries. Its not appropriate or ethical. In fact it is discrimination. He should have offered her the option to have a referral elsewhere if he did not have th resources to attend to his patients need appropriately. I am not overweight, but that doesnt make my health or my child health more important than another womans. Even if one was to think that weight was a fault of the person (which i am NOT saying)- the child should not be penalised for that.

why do you Americans have ultrasounds every time you go to the doctor, is it really needed
I dont agree with the way the doctor said it but 11 weeks is early to try to find the heartbeat on a doppler. 16 weeks is the norm here

I dont know where "here" is for you, but im Australian, and many women are given untrsounds at 6-8 weeks, especially if assisted conception or unsure of date, or if a woman has had a misscarriage.
