What a jerk. He should not have said that.

Just FYI I am a petite lady and my doc refused to check for a heart beat with the doppler at 10+2 prenatal appointment stating that its too early to find it easily. I told her I needed reassurance so she busted out the bedside ultrasound. So although at 10 weeks it is too early for dopplers at a prenatal visit he should not have blamed it on your size.

I never got "dopplered" by my midwife until I was 16+ weeks.

TBH though, if he hadn't managed to find a heartbeat, it would have only panicked you, right?

I have heard that it's true, if you're overweight, it is a lot harder to find the hb with doppler. He probably should have had better bedside manner or have not made you feel like he was just brushing you off though. I think the extra fat in your abdomen just puts more padding between the doppler and the hb and makes it harder to detect, but with a vaginal ultrasound, that shouldn't matter...maybe you can get that instead?

I would change doctors! my dr said they start using doppler to hear HB at 10? weeks... might have been 12.... I found HB with my home doppler at exactly 9 weeks... I'm not skinny but I'm not overweight though, so not sure if weight has anything to do with it but that's a jerk thing to say!

I think he should have said well, if you want to try, we can give it a go.... it isn't like he is paying you to be there, you are paying him for his time.... I think doctors forget that fact...and sometimes maybe we need to remind them.

What the hell?! Why is no one outraged by how this doctor treated her?! I can NOT believe that!!

Especially since there's this- please forgive me I don't know the name- wand thingy that they stick in your lady bits (its uncomfortable- I'm warning you) that will let you see your baby. They had to do that with me on my first pregnancy (m/c'd at 10 weeks....found out at the ultrasound) because I have a tilted uterus so they couldn't see a thing.

I'm a little overweight, but if ANY doctor said that to me I'd be switching IMMEDIATELY and if he has a superior, I would definitely be filing a complaint. Whether you're a big girl or not, you could've seen your baby. He's just an asshole. F*CK that doctor!

I really feel some type of way about this- I'm completely outraged! How DARE him!!!

I am in the overweight section and when I was pregnant with my second baby I was able to hear his heartbeat at 9 weeks!! The thing is the midwife was trying to tell me that I was too big and it was too early and she didnt think we would hear anything, but after pressuring her for about 5 minutes she finally agreed to try and sure enough I was right. Sounds like you need to switch doctors IMO.
