Why the back pain?

This is probably a stupid question but I have read we're not supposed to sleep on our backs whilst pregnant, so I've been doing my best to keep to my sides, even though I used to quite like sleeping on my back. Well the other night my partner who has a cold decided to sleep on the sofa so as not to disturb me. I ended up getting a fantastic night's sleep however I woke at about 3am and I'd been laying on my back (unawares). As I tried to turn over I was met with a horrible achey pain in my back. The closest feeling I can describe it to is if you sleep with your arms above your head. That kind of pain. I get a similar but lighter pain if I slouch in my chair too. What causes this so early in pregnancy? I thought it was to do with the extra weight from the baby but the baby is still so small. Is this normal?
