Each to their own I say, but my hairdresser said it was ok. She said years back it was thought if placed on the scalp dyes may get absorbed into the blood and could affect the baby. She is very careful not to let this happen so said I should be fine. However, my opinion (and just my opinion and as I said each totally to their own) I am not having my hair highlighted whilst pregnant was even if its a 0.00001% risk its still not worth it. Having my hair mousey and crappy ain't gonna hurt me, but that is just me.

I agree!. I am a black woman and my natural hair is kinky, and hard to manage aka NAPPY!. i always get relaxers so i can have the long silky straight look but nope! not while im pregnant. Im happy to be nappy as long as my baby is healthy!

I am in "dyes hair red" camp so I haven't dyed it since becoming pregnant but as my hair seems to have grown loads over the last few weeks I now have a big chunk of roots - desperately want to dye it. Dye has no ammonia in it...but I'm still fretful of the other potential risks from chemicals being absorbed through the scalp. Going to try to wait few more weeks until 2nd tri and then decide :/

I'm going to dye mine tonight, as my roots are getting ridiculous! I've asked a few people and googled a bit and it seems fine; the main danger is lack of ventilation and breathing in the fumes. So, it should be totally fine as long as you open a couple of windows. Someone told me I shouldn't paint my nails either!! Almost cried haha, but think that's ok too. So many bloody things to worry about!

I think people just panic too much. There's too many worry worts who find problems with everything and cause every pregnant woman to go gaga!! Plenty of babies are born perfectly healthy by women who don't stick themselves in a bubble for 9mths too! All the worry does more harm than hair dye I'm sure.

My "What To Expect When You're Expecting" book says it is better to wait until the after the 1st Trimester and to try and pick an ammonia free or low ammonia content dye. However, if you are going to do it before the end of the 1st tri, to only dye the roots, not to do a full hair dye.

There are always risks involved when subjecting yourself to poisonous chemicals. My grays are showing but I am waiting until after the 1st tri to dye my roots.
