abnormal blood work

I has blood work done to check for abnormalities in the baby. Im 16 wks along and the dr. called and told me that it came back with a 1 in 60 chance of the baby having down syndrome. Ive been really freaked about it but Ive also read that most of the time the blood work is inaccurate. So I have to wait 2 weeks for a ultrasound and amnio to see if all is o.k. So I was wondering if anyone has had abnormal blood work then found out every thing was ok. Im just really nervous. Thanks

This exactly happened to my friend... she did all the tests and the baby was totally healthy... so hope the same is true for you... those tests have a very high false positive rate unfortuately... try not to worry...(I know easier said than done)...

Do you have the Ready Steady Baby book? I'm sure there's a bit in that about it where it says that something like 9 out of 10 women who come out at high risk go on to have healthy babies. I might have those numbers wrong but I was reading it the other night and was surprised at how often the first blood tests flag something up that ends up to be nothing.

Try not to worry too much. In fact, think of it this way, you have a 59 in 60 chance of having a healthy baby.

The only other thing I wanted to say is, have you spoken to someone and thought seriously about what it means to have an amnio? I'm sure you have but don't feel that you have to have one as it comes with its own risks too.

Here they don't call it a test as it doesn't provide a definate answer like amnio does. It only gives you a probability of your baby having down's or trisomy. Please don't read the 1:60 as a positive test for down's as it isn't a test at all.

This thread is over 3 years old. I kind of doubt the op is still around....but you never know. I however, had this happen to me last week. Had abnormal blood work for Trisomy 21 - Downs Syndrome. Gave me a 1:190 chance. Long story short, had an amnio and the blood work was WRONG. All is well with my baby boy. Try not to worry - I know, much easier said than done. I did tons of research online and it seems these blood tests are not very accurate at all! Hope this gives you at least some reassurance.

My quad screen blood work results showed 1:100 chance of DS. I had the amnio, and my baby is fine. My experience with the amnio procedure was not as bad or scary as some people make it out to be. The chance of mc is very low. I'm glad I did the amnio because it gave me peace of mind.

My blood work results were not *wrong*. 1:100 means that the baby is healthy 99% of the time. As a previous poster mentioned, these are not *tests*. They don't give you a black and white answer - only the amnio does.
