What causes big babies?

I have gained 20lbs so far in my pregnancy.... There I said it...
Will this mean my baby is going to be big?

What factors make a big baby?

It is combination of genetics and nutrition.

My mother had really big babies, my brother tipping the scales at 10lbs, but we were all really long babies, as opposed to being chubby.

Gestational diabetes can also lead to big babies.

I know diabetes can cause big babies, but in my case. I just liked eating too much.

When I was pregnant with my son, I gained 50 pounds and he was a little baby at 6lbs, 6oz.

Def doesn't mean your baby is going to be big hun, thats normally down to nutrition and genes My cousin put on 14 1/2 lbs in her whole PG (she started a UK size 8) and her baby was 9lb 8oz

Don't worry about 20lbs - I've put on at least that much (haven't weighed myself lately as I'm too worried to!)...and I've got a big fat Easter egg on my desk waiting to be eaten!

i watched a really interesting documentary on this yesterday..... if anyone has virgin tv, its in the on demand section, in more free tv (i think) and its called britans biggest babies... the general conculsion was that obese mums have a much higher chance of having a big baby, but obviously there are exclusions to this both ways... diabetes was also a big factor.. there was a 23st lady who had a happy healthy 6lb baby too.. so its not a given thing. My OH was actually 12lb when he was born, and his sister 11lb 7oz, and their mum is tiny! the programme also showed lots of ladys like this... slim ladies who just make bigger babies! and in general, by toddler age, these babies had levelled out with their peers and there was no real difference, whereas the babies born to larger ladies generally stayed as larger kids.. dont mean overweight necessarily..tall and just generally bigger.
and just to reassure you.. we arent talking about average size 16 ladies who put on 20lb during pregnancy, it was ladies who were up to 30st, and very obese.. i wuldnt stress about putting on 20lb hun.. as long as bubs is happy and healthy in there thats all that matters.. we can always hit the gym afterwards!

My first son was 10lb 10oz and i went up to a size 26 from a 18 (uk) I wasn't diabetic then but developed diabetes after my son. I'm having to watch everything i eat with this baby as never lost my weight after having my son so i'm starting of big.

Just because you put on weight this does not mean you will have a big baby, so try not to worry too much, its down to genes more then anything, some people put on tons of weight and have small babies, others put on hardly any weight and have big babies, take care XX

I think it all depends on what your eating and also your metabolism! My friend put on 2 stone and had a massive bump and her baby was 4lb, he was premature but the doc said her tummy had been all water!

Ive already put on 10lb and thats me just left 1st tri, this is unusual for me as im tiny (4 foot 11) and very petite usually size 6/8, I was worried about it too but i suppose its just part of being pregnant, try not to worry!
I feel like im going to burst just now its horrible, i just hope i dont end up huge as my tiny frame couldnt cope!

Try not to worry hun. xx
