Choroid Plexus Cyst at 20 week scan

Hello girlies,

Has anyone here heard of this, the sonographer found one in my baby's brain which immediately made me want to scream but then she said its ok, nothing to worry about etc which makes me feel like im being stupid, the words cyst and brain dont go together too well to me. I googled it and found that mostly it should be ok if there are no other markers but in some cases it can be a indicator of edwards syndrome which is scarey. Anyone has experience of this frightening condition?

Yup, me. Just found out last week and my Dr. wasn't that worried--she saw my face though when she told me and let me read the medical article she had to put my mind at ease. Basically if it's isolated (i.e., no other soft markers for disorders) and since everything else was fine on our scan anatomically, it doesn't really mean anything. This kind of cyst is associated with a pretty severe chromosome disorder anyways (i.e., Trisomy 18--I think--there would be clenched hands and abdominal wall malformations that would have been seen on the ultrasound) and our boy had none of this. Of course it was upsetting to hear that the baby had a cyst in his brain...but my OH and I have both relaxed a lot about it.

We've been rolling with the punches with our ultrasounds so far--the 1st one they thought maybe something was wrong with the baby's bladder not emptying which turned out to be perfectly fine on subsequent ultrasounds and then this cyst thing! Googling about this specific condition has put my mind more at ease than making me more worried.

I had an aquaintance who was sent to do an amnio for this. She was really upset and went to see another U/S doctor, who said that this was fairly common, and the cysts usually disappear by themselves. She did the amnio anyway, but by her next U/S everything was ok, cysts were gone - later the amnio came back negative too.

So if the doctor says it's nothing to worry about, i`d believe them...

Thanks guys, im sort of trying not to be too down hearted, I guess I will just have to try to relax and take the Drs advice, sucks when everyone asks how the scan went and I just dont feel like saying about the cyst. So I say - oh it was ok and feel a bit guilty. Just cant be bothered with all the explanation that is required! Mom 2 be I will keep you up to date with any news I get. Thanks for both your answers

Hi, I just got back from my doctor. It was discovered that my baby has these cysts (2 of them I think) at the 20 weeks scan. Annoyingly enough at the 24 week scan they still hadn't disappeared and I am starting to get very nervous. They immediatley said no to an amnio bc my triple screening numbers had come back so good and all of his other measurements are fine. Does anyone have any reassuring words? I now have to wait another month for another scan and it feels interminable....
